Title: Smoking ban hits NC Jan 2
Post by: MasterBlaster on January 01, 2010, 11:47:41 AM
The heart of tobacco in the US has adopted a smoking ban
in similar fashion as other states. I'm surprised that it has come so soon.

Government knows best.  You should all do what ever they say.  You are not able to make decisions on your own.

This is a free country and every one's opinion is therefore valid.

I am an ex-smoker since Christmas Eve 1991 and am glad to see the public no smoking bans gaining wider acceptance.  Am always surprised when down in VA and NC area to walk into a hotel bar or eating place and smell smoke.

Was a 1.5 pack/day smoker before quitting.  That is 548 packs a year, at say $5/pack and equals $2737 a year.  That is significant audio system upgrade money per annum.   ;D

Personally, I am in favor of the ban.
I am opposed to limiting our freedoms up to the extent
that interferes with my own. A smoker has the right to light up.
but the moment they do, it affects everyone around them.
That is the crux of the issue here.

I am all for permits and exceptions to allow establishments to
allow smoking. That is their choice. I just think it should be the exception to the rule.

To me, this levels the playing field for businesses and patrons.

Now on the other hand, places that allow smoking, but ban cigars piss me off!!!!

What most folks don't seem to realize is that laws like this BS are leading to a very slippery slope. You need to ask yourself, what are they going to take away or restrict me from next?

The fact is that 1/5th of Americans smoke.
Although smokers are a minority, it is still significant enough
that businesses would not take the chance themselves and risk losing customers. That is why a law was needed to nudge business in the right direction.

I have the same concerns about government controls, yet I still stand by my previous statement:
Smokers rights should not infringe upon the rights of non-smokers.

A smoker can choose to visit a non smoking establishment by simply not smoking. Can a non smoker visit a smoking facility and not breathe the seconhand smoke? No.
