Quick meeting to listen to the Infinity RS1bs. Bottom line:
- They sound like monkey ass on the bass side without the proper crossover
- They probably need more power than the PS Audio Delta 100's 200w at 4 ohms can muster for the bass
- The hum generated by the Grado cart combined with the Regar table is impressive
- There is some debate about how cool/uncool the oak finish looks in 2013
So I ordered a refurb Infinity crossover (that helps the bass - allegedly) and it should be here Thursday. The passive crossovers need recap because the poly caps have the words "Mexico" stenciled on them ( no other scientific reason offered by Tom).
Rev brought kick ass River Current cables that at least helped the whole thing look cooler.
I still believe the C-19 pre is not up to par but get kicked in the balls when I insinuate that.
Mark, Ed, Big Tom, Carl et al who could not make it - hope to catch you on the next one.
The Archer revue was great. Al brought a SACD collection of Jazz at the Pawnshop.
Hell, Papabearjew made it to the meeting and shared good news about shrinking cancer tumors - that by itself was a huge success.

I really wish I could have been there, but family came first today. Those speakers look uber impressive. I always wanted to hear a pair (or quad). Hopefully you hang onto them long enough for me to get a chance.
Super news from PBJ!!!
-
Looking at the picture, I'm not sold on your speaker placement. That could have something to do with the less than impressive performance.
Was an Oppo in use? That menu looks very similar to the one in my 970.
-
Yes, I forgot to say congrats to PBJ!
-
I need to give input on your last point, Pepe. The oak is sub zero and timeless.
-
Nice projector! The speakers look ok too. :P Once you are done fixing them up please tell when the next meeting will be. I would love to hear them!

I did not have the chance to sit in a sweet spot but they didn't sound like monkey ass. I think recapping the internal crossovers will help big time. Looking at how the Infinity external crossover is supposed to be used in conjunction with the bass columns, I think that will help tremendously. They are supposed to be servo controlled. I'm not 100% on explaining this but looking at the diagram, the bass out on the crossover goes back into the crossover before once again leaving like a loop. I think once that's sorted you should be able to tell if your ps audio has enough power or not.
I like the look of the wood and the size alone of each column is impressive. Does having the grills on/off effect the sound? I didn't see them lying around, not sure if you even have them. Maybe to stick with the 80's theme, you can use Alf or A-Team sheets to make new grills. I think we gave you enough shit last night, i'll stop.

I am sorry I missed the event. It is better I did not show up and spread the cold I have been dealing with for the last week now.
Those are impressive looking speakers! If you need power, I can bring over my Sunfire 600 next time. 1200 watts into 4 ohm should help with your bass.
-
Pepe, why don't you try putting the bass towers the same distance from the listening position as the mid / high towers?
You're probably losing quite a few dB based on placement alone with your current arrangement.
-
I am sorry that I missed this event. I had family committments to keep and I did.
Great news about PBJs medical issues!!!
Happy Birthday BJ!
As for the photo, it looks like what started as a jail break ended as group of beached whales! >:D
Recapping crossovers always yields good results. I've always used Sonicap on anything 20 uF or lower, Solens or Daytons on anything over 20uF. Don't forget to replace the resistors. Mills 10W resistors should be good.
I look forward to another opportunity to hear these classic speakers.
Regards,

Nice projector!
I don't see a projector in the two photos??
Pepe, with respect to speaker placement.......did Infinity give any guidance?

Here's a link to the owner's manual (just in case you have not already found it)

Bmr75. Projector is right above my head (I'm the handsome one)
-
Thanks everyone with the well wishes
-
LOL!!
I was only seeing the left 1/2 of the pictures. Didn't realize there was a scroll bar that would allow me to see the right 1/2.
-
Bmr75. I did the same thing myself originally. Glub glub!
-
Thanks for your hospitality, Pepe.
It will be interesting to hear them again once the crossover is in place.
-
Pepe-Per the manual, it appears those low frequency towers may use over damped woofers, which will sound like crap with out the active crossover. Within the crossover function, the contour controls will likely adjust the degree of low frequency boost to the woofers. There were a number of speakers companies using over damped woofs in the 1980s. An RTA and some pink noise will allow you to measure the set up once the x-over arrives, to fine tune the base boost. I have one I can bring to the next demo (hint hint)
-
I almost forgot, but regarding the power question, as you know even just a 3 db boost to the woofs will double the required amplifier power. You may need a bit more boost than that (3 db isn't much), depending on where the standing waves are in your room. If you are already concerned about the power sufficiency to the woofer towers of your 200 watt amp, I'll guess that 300 to 500 watts at 4 ohms may be required to get to life like levels, if you listen that way. I'll further speculate the Infinities can handle all the power you can throw at them.

Macgeek - may need to have you over soon then!!
