My $20 JBL L-100

The tweeters especially look very rough, but everything seems to be 100% functional.   New foam rings and dust caps are available and inexpensive, but recones for those tweeters are quite expensive.   I'm going to see if with some patience I can smooth them out before I start looking at other options.

I see two different everything in the top pic.

But that question does bring up a good point.   I always hesitate to make a pleural of a model number because I wonder if the "s" at the end will be mistaken as part of the model number.   Does anyone else wonder about this?

I just moved the L100s into the main system.   Listening to "Caution Horses" by Cowboy Junkies right now.   I like these speakers.   I can't wait to give 'em a proper refurb this summer.

Actually, I plan to do the x-over mod this winter and the cabs in the summer.   Santa brought me a meter with a Henries setting.

Very nice, Thrifty!  Hoping to add a pair of JBL Studios to my system very soon, they oo will need a bit of a 'makeover'.

Enjoying some of that west coast sound.  I have some " best buy" version of jbl floor standing speakers...OK for HT.
Kinda heavy on the bass for music.   Yours are much better than mine.  I heard a pair a few years ago and remember the
tight, punchy bass.  At that time I had a pair of KLH 6's.  They were nice but a bit too polite. All the KLHs that I've
I've owned (mod 6, 17, 20s) were all a bit too rolled off on the top end excerpt maybe the 20's.
That's what struck me about the L100's....punchy, tight, slightly in your face.  I've always wanted a pair of the jbl 43xx s or a set of L100s.   I have a pair of Scott 196s which were the competitors to that series of jbl...so I read.

My daughter's system has a pair of Best Buy JBLs.   LC-312.   She loves them.   They have lots of bass, but it is kind of "flubby" while these are very tight.   I really hope all of the things I hear about the xover mod are true.   Supposedly it takes these from good to world class.

I recall the high end response was always the tug-of war between the JBLs and Advent/KLH speaker lines.  Some people liked the brighter sound of the JBLs, compared to the KLH/Advents and some didn't.  I recall dealers at the time tended to carry one speaker line or the other.  To me, the KLH/Advents were the preferred sound, but that may have been because of the receivers I listened to (Pioneer and the European stuff, like B & O and Tandberg).

Had a pair of JBL L 100s from 1974 or 75 to 1980  got them because I kept trying the tweeters in the BICs and had to pay for three seats in a car when I brought them home lol  the 100s are among my all time favs

Guys down the street had Large Advents and another KLH ?  Strongly preferred the L 100s when we did some comparison listening. But they were also a bit more $$  mine had the blue grills

Advents and JBLs actually sound quite similar if you put the JBLs face down.

Hey STaL,
I bought a pair of L100's new in the mid 70's along with a Marantz 2325. Guess I liked the West Coast sound back in the day. The sculpted grilles did last long; they self destructed. JBL did acknowledge thisproblem many years ago and offered replacements with cloth including new frames. I bought them when offered direct from JBL. It was many years ago but as I recall they were reasonably priced. As I listen mainly to jazz & classical now I had given these to my older son many years ago. Highs & mids  were OK but low end was never real accurate with double (upright) bass and bread wasn't very clean sounding. My son still uses them to this day. I paid $300 a piece back in the day. Certainly not cheap. They are welll built.
