Hello
« on: February 12, 2015, 04:08:42 PM »
Hi all I have been lurking here for a bit now but wanted to introduce myself and also show my progress on a pair of Advent speakers I'm trying to get working.

I found a pair of Advents with the masonite ring in the trash.  One woofer was missing and one needed foam. Big thanks to Sir-Thrift-Alot who was nice enough to give me a spare woofer I needed. The other apparently was repaired with tape so I removed that cleaned up the cone and replaced the foam.  I need to figure out if I can fix the dust cap or replace it but so far I'm happy with my first successful re-foam.

Well sorry for the ramble but I figure since sir-thirft-alot was so kind to help me I should show my progress an say hello!

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome Mike.

The dust cap can be fixed by taking a vacuum cleaner wand and carefully pulling the cap back out.  Hold the woofer with your other hand while doing this to prevent voice coil damage.  It is an easy fix, I've done it quite a few times.

Some people have also been successful using duct tape to pull out the dents.

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the forum. There is a real cast of characters here. Sir Thrifty is a good guy and contributes a lot of info here. We disagree on occasion but we always part friends when he reluctantly admits he's wrong >:D
He hooked me up with a pair of Mini Advents for my bedroom. They're perfect for going to sleep to listening to jazz or classical. Actually for their size they sound pretty darn good.
Tell us a bit more about yourself...musical interests/equipment interests etc.

Brad

Welcome Mike.  I too have used Duct tape to pull dust caps, with reasonable success.

Welcome, Mike.   Glad you posted and really glad the woofer is working out for you (in case anyone misunderstood, I gave him a good one to use in place of one that was "upgraded" to a Rat Shack driver or some such thing).   I also encouraged him to refoam the other driver (pictured).

As far as the dust cap goes, I've had good luck spraying those cloth ones (cloth IIRC) with a water mister then pulling the damp cap out with a vacuum.   Easy on the mist and approach slowly with the hose.

Welcome Mike!

The fix that BMWR75 suggested is a good one.  Slow and easy it will work.  The dust cap may not be perfectly spherical but it will be much better.  Thanks for joining
Carl

I wonder if a heat gun would have lifted the black paint from the Masonite ring.   I wouldn't try now unless you want more practice refoaming!

Advents were Kloss, like KLHs and ARs.   So they also have that "laid back" "East Coast" sound (I'm not a huge fan).

Nothing wrong with the sound of a good working pair of original Large Advents.
Very musical and uncolored but not the last word in high frequency detail or imaging.

Hi Mike.
I love my New Large Advents (NLA).  By no means the ultimate speaker but loads of fun.
Stellar bass when properly positioned.  I'm in the process of rebuilding the crossovers
now....still collecting all the parts I need. Good luck with your rebuild.
