Beats teardown - BOM $16.89

An interesting read on the build quality of the headphones. Can't say I'm terribly shocked to see the bill of materials was only $16.89.

Disappointing that people gladly hand over their hard earned cash for fools gold.

Found a follow up article that revealed the unit they tore down was counterfeit. They got legit versions and compared them to the counterfeit. find to be very similar - actual BOM is $20.19

It's a shame innocent buyers get screwed.  While I know a few things about some of what I buy, I am certain there are other things I buy, about which I know little, where I have been screwed.

Marketing companies. Monster Cable, Bose, etc. They sell the name or emotion over the product. Dyson is another great one, pile of plastic junk. Informed buyers, who look past the ads, usually don't make illogical decisions. I'm sure we've all fell for it at one time or another, when in doubt do a little research.

My guess is BEATS is not the only headphone manufacturer that would have a low BOM value.  We'd all probably be surprised and alarmed how little parts cost to build a number of expensive cans.

Okay, if this is going to morph into that thread, let me just say that my Grado SR-60s are the only piece of audio gear that I bought in college which I still have.   I love them and would never willingly part with them.

I didn't read the whole thread; I thought he was talking about beats.  I thought maybe he lost his mind.  Good to see you're still sane, Klaus.

Also... the SR60's are really nice.  If they were closed, I'd probably own them.
