Goodwill hunting at my local yesterday.... so many cds you keep sorting through the same ones, over and over again ... but worth it for a few $2 gems.

Found the soundtrack to the movie Kansas City. Music is great, and it's a pretty remarkable recording. Imaging is among the best I've ever heard. A full CD page of notes re the engineering that went into the recording. Very highly recommended!

one of my $2 finds;  Chick Corea  My Spanish Heart

Have a number of his albums, but was still not a big fan.... But I really like this one... and the recording is just fantastic!  One of the better "mike jobs" I've heard in quite a while. You can place the players very very precisely.

Nice surround mix of a great album.   The visuals are weak and the menuing wonky, but it's a great listen.   They really got the vintage spring reverb sound in Tom's vocals right.

It's a great set.  I've picked up a few of these mosaics directly from founder Michael Cuscuna.  I spoke with him a while back and he told me that, back in the day, he put a handful of each of their releases aside for 'retirement planning'.  I think they are getting close to closing down the operation within a few years.

It's a rotten shame....

I have been building Tidal play lists, either be genre or by decade, as I am sure some you may also be doing.  I spent a couple of hours this afternoon scrolling through time; when I got to the contemporary stuff (the last 10 years), I had to back about 10db off the volume control.  Damn compression.
Mac stuff, Sony HDR-F1HD AM/FM/HD tuner, Denon DRS 810 cassette, Denon CDR-W1500 CD recorder, Music Hall MMF-9 w/B&O MMC2, B & O 4002 w/B & O 20 CL, Revox A-77

A DVD-A made from a transfer of the Japanese only discrete quad mix of this seminal soul album.   "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" in surround is just mind blowing.   Great stuff.   Only topped by...

Also from Japan only CD-4 vinyl.   I think I like this mix even better than the LA mix.   I don't even have to bother saying what a masterpiece the album is, do I?   The 50th Anniversary of this album is coming up, maybe Universal will give us a Blu-Ray with 24/192 stereo, this quad mix and a new Atmos mix.   Is that too much to ask?

STAL,
"What's Going On", one of my favorite songs and albums.
If you can, take a listen to the Quincey Jones version on his CTI "Smackwater Jack" album. As an aside, the cast of characters on the album is incredible.

Out of the Afternoon - Roy Haynes Quartet
Impulse A-23

great music for a Saturday morning.  This is one of 30 LPs I picked up Thursday, mostly jazz.  Some Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Gene Ammons as well as some free jazz stuff like several Art Ensemble of Chicago LPs and Ornette live at Prince Street.

We're all together again for the first time     Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond et all....

Has to be one of the best live recordings I've heard.... been playing this off and on for about a week now, and still can't get over the recording/ mix. Pretty darn good for 1973
