scored some vintage 1990 Boston T-930's and an absolute mint Pioneer Elite VSX 95 Receiver.
The Boston's were their first line of towers... The middle sibling in the "T" line. They retailed for $750 in their hayday and were heralded as performing as well as speakers costing 3 times as much. They do sound rich even with the rotted foam on the woofer. They looked terrible when i picked them up with the laminate peeling away everywhere and smelled like they were stored in a nicotine chamber. I was so fed up with the look and the smell, I decided to peel away the laminate finish exposing the flawless smooth heat pressed finished MDF. I realized this finish is quite nice. Nary a scratch, flaw or tug on the cabinet and grill. All this for 30 bucks ! A call to "Simply Speakers" ,$26.95 and two hours of my time and these will be mint once again. T-930's in the raw...
The VSX 95 is absolutely mint. Not a single mark on the thing. The urushi finish is perfect and the rosewood side panels are perfect in every detail. This was Pioneer's first "Elite" reciever and retailed for $1200 in the early 90's The beauty of this lies in it's back panel... seperate pre-outs / amp-in's for each of the 5 channels. Cost 135 shipped.
In direct mode the soundstage is much more open then my previous reciever and at 125 wpc to the mains yeilds enough power to drive the T-930's effortlessly. Running them with the 901's yeilds a very unique and accurate sound. They really pick up where the 901's leave off.
Overall a great sound and an even greater deal. My offer still stands. Give em a listen and I'll supply the social lubricant
