Funk, Fusion Jazz, Prog Rock fans?

I'm looking for advice on what bands to pick up. I've been listening to an iTunes station that plays only Funk, Fusion Jazz, and Progressive rock, and I like pretty much everything I hear. The only problem is, it doesn't say what's currently playing. The only two that I know of, Passport and Weather Report, I own. If any of you are fans and have advice to give, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help. I just picked up Mahavishnu orchestra and Return to Forever. Cool stuff. I should have known RTF was a Chick Corea thing. I have the LP Return to Forever by Chick Corea.

Camel and Caravan are both awesome.

If yinz guys are interested, use Slacker Radio. Their Prog Rock station is awesome, the sound quality seems to be better than Pandora, and it actually displays the song, artist, and album.

If you like Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin did some of his best (IMHO) work with Miles Davis.
I highly recommend these (I have them all):

- A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Miles Davis, 1971, Columbia

BTW, it was Miles who created Jazz Fusion..........among about 7 other genre of music.

Miles is the king, but, to say he solely invented jazz fusion is a total discredit to both Gary Burton and Larry Coryell. Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Ronnie Carter, and a few others who were hanging out with Miles at the time were also hugely influential on jazz fusion.

Any albums from the late 60's by any of these guys will be a total treat.

Oh yeah, and Chick Corea did about 10 albums with Miles.

That entire avant-garde crew that Miles, Chick, Herbie and the like were hanging around all appear on each others albums, often uncredited.

Isn't it about time for Ken Burns Jazz to be on PBS?

When it comes to that documentary, Burns is almost as big of a music snob as me.

According to him, Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington are solely responsible for the art form. I bet nearly 40% of the film is about them. I won’t belittle much of Satchmo’s contributions, but most of Ellington’s songs were penned by Billy Strayhorn as Duke stood front & center never crediting Billy for the vast majority of his compositions. Just one example is the fact that Ellington’s most famous “Take the A Train” was written by Billy on the train during his trip to audition for Duke.

Meanwhile, Burns spent a total of probably less than five minutes on Miles. Bollocks!


Back on topic, let us not forget to include the band Weather Report.

Rev, you mentioned Zappa. I've always liked Zappa when friends put it on, but for some reason never bought any... There are a ton of Zappa albums out there. Which would you recommend starting out with?
