Buddy looking in Columbus for a system..
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:05:32 PM »
I was looking for a speaker system for a friend of mine on craigslist and came across this listing. http://columbus.craigslist.org/ele/2623668747.html  I called them up and they said all had Onkyo R1 on it.  Anyone have any ideas?  $100 is not a lot of money to dump into a system and they aren't exactly needing top quality; though, quality is still a plus.

Not even sure how much this guy wants to spend so I probably shouldn't put much work into finding something for him but I was taking a break from readings.  Thanks for any feedback!

The Marantz looks like it has been through hell!!!!  I don't know crap about the other, but it looks like it will play music. Go audition it and see for yourself. For $100 you got nothing to lose!!!!!  O0
IN REALITY IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO YOU!!!!!

Haha, I can't exactly audition it due to distance, but I will send my friend to take a look at it.  Really as long as he likes it that is what is important.  Thanks!

You have to be willing to take a drive for a good deal, but what I have seen what you are looking at, it would be best for him to go and check it out.

Just a few questions:

1.  How much does he have to spend
2.  Does he have anything now to work with or is it a startup system
3.  What type of music will he be playing, ie, what will he need to play, a CD player, MP3, TT?

I am sure if you put to gather some more information, a few of us can keep our eyes open and point out things that look good.
Got Carver?

Pretty sure he is in the $100 range and listens to jazzy music and 80s rock.  He has absolutely no audio equipment at all.  I think he has the music on CDs and on MP3s but I am not positive.   I will get with him later and find out!  Thank you!

I've got a nice clean Kenwood KA-601 integrated amp and HK tuner I'd let go for $100.
I'll be moving soon and have a couple receivers I'd like to sell so I don't have to haul them around,
but more in the $200-$300 range.

That Onkyo system consists of an ARV-401 integrated amp (100WPC) and what appears to be a DXC - 310 (or so) CD changer. The tuner looks like nothing special, as does the cassette deck. The speakers are probably no more than mass market mediocrity.

I wouldn't buy it, and everyone knows I'm a high-end Onkyo junkee.

If he's interested, I have an Onkyo TX 6000 receiver and a set of Sansui SP 5500x's that he could afford.

On second thought, if he's just doing some casual listening, that Onkyo system might be for him.

The ARV-401 is a decent integrated. Not great, not horrible, but decent. The CD changer is probably not horrible either.

The "R1" is actually an "RI" - It indicates that those components can be integrated into Onkyo's whole house remote control system.
