Outside the Country Purchase
« on: May 27, 2012, 07:50:20 PM »
I am, looking to buy a turntable in Toronto,Canada. Is there any customs charges or other delays I can expect if I have it shipped? I am considering driving to get it(300 miles),but I guess I need a passport to do so. Just wondering if anybody bought items from outside the country and how you made out.   Thanks!!

I think it depends on the seller being ok with dedlaring a lower value for the item in the bill of lading. I have sold 3 shortwave radios to Canadian buyers and that seems to be the ask.  Some may balk at selling to Canada because of difficulty tracking shipments. That did not bother me.

DO NOT use UPS; they charge a huge processing fee for Canadian shipments.

As I live in Canada, and ship to the US 3 or 4 times a year. This is the most cost efficient way that I have found.

1) The item has to be valued at $100.00 or less, same for the insurance.
You can not have an item with a value of $50.00 insured for $500.00
even if the $500.00 is the real value.

2) Have the shipper ship by Canada Parcel Post. It takes a long time but it is cheap.
If you are in a rush, you could use FedEx, but as Gary has mentioned do not use UPS.

Hope this helps
