I guess reference means different things to different people.

my 2 cents worth is anything that provides the sound that's close to a live production without enhancements is my idea of reference.

The definition of reference is Rev's system.

According to Rev.

To me the term "reference" doesn't apply to a component/cd player because of the company or name brand.  I think of reference in terms of what features it has.  Cooper chasis, xlr jacks/balanced output, isolated power supply, (in the case of a cd player) special drive that requires a puck, weight or clamp.  Tom has a "reference" cd player at the shop that is a Sony.  Sounds awesome.

Not much in town anymore.  Of course, there is Vintage Hi-Fi on Babcock Blvd.  Northern Audio is also on Babcock, about 1 1/2 miles down the road.  I think it's appointment only.  In Natrona Heights, there is Butches Sound Shack.  The old Listening Post in Shadyside is a part of Northern Audio now.

An hour from the North Hills is the Sound Shop, in Canfinld OH, on Rt 224.

If there are others, someone please chime in.  I am interested as well.
Mac stuff, Sony HDR-F1HD AM/FM/HD tuner, Denon DRS 810 cassette, Denon CDR-W1500 CD recorder, Music Hall MMF-9 w/B&O MMC2, B & O 4002 w/B & O 20 CL, Revox A-77
