TT has no bass compared to a CD
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:10:40 AM »
Hey Guys,

I have a system with a Project RM5.1SE TT running a Sumiko EVO III cartridge. Also have a CD player in the same system. The TT is very lacking in bass compared to the CD player on the same music.

Thoughts on why this might be?

Regards,
Scott

The first thing I would check would be the tracking weight.  If the cartridge is set too light, it would lack bass.  Look up what the recommended weight should be for your cart online and use a scale to adjust the weight.  If you don't have a little scale, you can buy one for less then $10 at Harbor freight.

Nevermind.    Was using an external MM phono pre with  high output MC cartridge.  Switching to a MC phono input on my preamp solved the problem.

I was thinking a mismatch between cartridge and phono preamp but didn't post it in time. That sucks as it might have made me sound smart...maybe not.

it's refreshing when flipping a switch or moving a cable fixes a problem.  In my world, It's always the most expensive thing that goes.

I was going to say also check for swapped + / - wiring.  out of phase condition will do the same thing.

I appreciate when guys as smart as Scott make those kind of mistakes.   It makes me feel a little better about all of my goofs.
