Speaker surround replacement
Mongojustpawn:
okay, the Optimus 990 speakers I picked up at the the thrift shop now have surrounds that are disintegrating, thinking I may attempt replacing the surrounds, been checking out YouTube to see what's involved, thoughts, advice appreciated.
RuralTom:
I replaced the surrounds on a pair of JBLs a few months ago- ifrst surround replacement ever- using the no-shim method and found it to be easy enough. Takes a little patience then concentrated effort while gluing, but it's not difficult at all.
Dicky:
Clean the old foam off with rubbing alcohol (old glue can stay). Glue CORRECT foam to cone (center by eye) and let glue set. Later Run a 10-30hz test tone (get one on YouTube) to center and glue foam to basket, and let set. Glue gasket on, and once glue dries enjoy. i have yet to shim a voice coil, and I have yet to have a problem. 8w can chime in on the ease of doing this as well.

It really is a simple job. The hardest part is being patient.
If you do use a test tone to center the voice coils, be sure to not crank the volume too high. Sometimes the oscillations can loosen up the adhesive on the surrounds.
Just go slowly and do one step at a time. :)
