Phase Linear 400 Repair?
« on: May 06, 2015, 01:53:08 PM »
Is there anyone locally that can work on a Phase Linear 400 amp? Hoping not to have to box it up and send it away.

Thanks,

Not sure when Tom will be ready to take on new projects but he knows his way around all Carver products like you know your name. I bought my PL400 from him. It was all recapped & had all connectors replaced with high end ones.

Could you please give me Tom's contact information please. Anyone else in case he is not accepting work?

I broke my amp, the meter leads to the VU meter flung off when unscrewing it into the board and POW! I was replacing one bad meter with a newer one from ebay, now my simple fix has cost me the amp! Ready to kick myself :-\ :-\ :-\

Step 1 for all repairs: Unplug the unit, allow capacitors to dissipate while collecting the evening's beverage of choice, and continue as normal.

I know that, broke my own rule. At the time it seemed it was the only way I could see if the new meter worked.

There is a fellow at Galaxy Electronics that some have used and been pleased.  I have no experience with this technician though, do my own repair work.

If you are into DIY, the good folks at Phoenix Audio Community Forums are Phase Linear experts.  @laatsch55 and @Gepetto guided me through a full blown refurb on a PL700B that was toast on one side and had 85V DC on both outputs.

Not sure about Galaxie yet. Had him work on my ReVox B795 turntable that had picked up a hum. $150 later and no improvement. Got no receipt either. Anyway my older son dropped it back off to him a couple weeks ago. As of today he's hoping to get to it this week or next week. I'll report back. He specializes in turntables so we'll see. I will say he is very nice and seems honorable

I agree Galaxie seems honorable.  I took a sub in for service and was promptly informed, due t it's surface mount components, they couldn't work on it.

One Galaxie benefit is the record store visit that automatically accompanies the trip.
Mac stuff, Sony HDR-F1HD AM/FM/HD tuner, Denon DRS 810 cassette, Denon CDR-W1500 CD recorder, Music Hall MMF-9 w/B&O MMC2, B & O 4002 w/B & O 20 CL, Revox A-77

I cant find anyone locally to look at this amp.  Vintage Hifi, I can't even get him on the phone or to reply. Galaxie, booked up for 3 weeks said they may not even be able to fix it.

Call a few repair shops and email it out.  The Soundsmith in NY would be one place to consider.

Good point by BJ - you can have one of the other forum members look at it - Bearjew,  AdamG, etc. They are local.  I can't  add myself to that list because I have a backlog and a regular job.

Or

You can take it to Atlas.  At your own risk.
