Dish Network - Personal Video Recorder

A friend gave me the Dish Network recorder...  I do not have dish network nor do I plan to get dish network...  I am guessing this is just a door stop/boat anchor for me correct?  If so, can anyone else use it?  Otherwise, I'll just recycle it...
