Score of the Century of the Week!
« on: August 30, 2010, 08:07:49 AM »
OK--so I'm a sucker for yard sales (especially really trashy ones)--but you never know what you might find, need, want, or just get a good laugh out of. Junior is selling a bunch of "junk" that was left over from his parents and grandparents (apparently all deceased for some time). Some of grandpa's old stereo equipment is included in this mess--Junior doesn't know if any of it works, since he can barely remember ever having seen it set up prior to his grandfather's death about 20 years ago. "It was supposed to be pretty good--but not like the cool Bose stuff I've got now". "I can't even hook it up to try it because Best Buy and Radio Shack don't sell old cables like that."

SCORE!!! Mark Levinson ML-1 preamp ($50), Mark Levinson ML-3 power amp ($50), and Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers ($100--pair)!!!

I spent half the night last night looking up specs and cleaning the stuff. The DQs will definitely need re-foamed, but the cabinets are in good shape. Still haven't had the guts to power up the MLs--besides I'm still tracking down a good source for the original ML CAMAC connectors/cables--the ones they don't sell at Best Buy or Radio Shack...

Great score!! I know you probably haven't stopped drooling over this gear yet, but I figured I'd throw this out there... If you ever decide to rid yourself of the ML-3, let me know!!
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

Just got home from work--continuing on the cleaning process--there's definitely 20 years worth of dust in/on/through everything. Better yet, the Levinsons were apparently wrapped in newspaper--old ink is an ugly, sticky mess (kind of like the nicotine/fog juice film you get in bars), but at least it comes off without taking lettering off with it. I'll post photos as soon as I can get everything "presentable". Still haven't plugged them in and powered them up--the suspense is killing me!!! ...t'was the night before Christmas...

Found the CAMAC cables--there are lots out there, but the company that makes/made them for ML is still out there; however, they only distribute commercially, so you talk to the guy with Fischer, who refers you to one of his distributors, who adds it to one of his retailer's order, who bills you and then they are drop-shipped (from the manufacturer). Should have them next week.

Next project--contacting ML to see about a total tune-up/servicing. Because of the potential value of these pieces in "perfect" working order, I am considering "biting the bullet" and having the the pros go over them before I do any (expensive) damage by trying to use them blind after sitting for so long.

BTW--does anyone know a reputable local business that does good re-foam work? The kits for the DQ-10s are readily available, but I would never attempt to work on these. The only re-foams I have ever had done were some Infinitys that I sent to California.

Tommy can refoam, but he's been pretty busy. Steve the refoam guy on craigslist. I can do it too.
