Lately I've been dividing my time between reel to reel tapes and vinyl. My brother was just visiting from Israel and he brought me a suitcase full of classical records he bought new in the 70's. Mostly Deutsche Grammophon. He has a lot more for me including classic rock. He doesn't listen to analog anymore. He also has a Technics table with SME tonearm from the 70's. He said it's real finicky to setup so I wasn't interested in it. Now that I have a wireless remote for my ReVox B77 and it's sounding so awesome I'm listening to lots of reel to reel tapes I recorded in the 70's. These are all classic rock from the 60's and 70's. Amazing how great they all still sound.
I am envious. I have my reel deck (also a Revox B77) on the shelf waiting for me to spend time recapping it. For that one I ordered a kit from Ebay that includes all the caps, transistors and trim pots (PBJ, your Revox emptied my capacitor bins, but at least I hear it was worth it!!). For mine I am planning to skip the trim pots because I would need to recalibrate if I replace them (unless I remove each very carefully and measure and replicate, which sounds like a pain). The more vintage stuff I crack open these days the more I find parts that have aged poorly (Paccom - I am looking at you). But once I do I plan to spend a good chunk of time listening to tapes again, they do sound pretty good.
