I'm kicking around the idea of buying a new cartridge for one or both of my mediocre turntables. I've read some pretty good reviews about the shure m97xe and was wondering if any of you have any experience. The one negative I read about was it's difficulty in setting up and alligning. Please advise.

Get it so I can see if I should get one. :P

Yeah, let me know if it is any good. My HK could use a new one.

Thanks Tom and Mike, but I have to be honest... these aren't the responses I was hoping for in a post asking for advice on whether or not to get a cartridge :D :D

I own one of these. It sounds OK to me on a Pioneer PL-50. Also have an Audio-Technica 95E Cartridge that sounds good on a Technics SL-23 TT. Lots of it depends on the synergy of the cartridge with your specific TT.

I think this cart was based off of the Shure V15 line which was really nice. I have the V15 IV and love it! I have heard good things about the 97e but have yet to test one out. On a positive note, they are cheap enough.

Yeah, my dad has a v15 (not sure which one) on a non working TT that I'll get (according to him) when he dies..... >:(

I used one of these carts for quite some time. For the money it's hard to find something better. I recommend them.

I'm not sure what the price point is on the Shure, but Denon makes a really nice moving coil cartridge (DL 103) that you can get for around $150. I recently bought the Denon 103R for my Rega turntable and am very happy with it. Some say that the MC cartridges offer better resolution, detail, and harmonics than a comparably priced MM cartridge; but I don't have the experience of comparing the two technologies at an equivalent price point.

Price point on the shure is around $60

Audio-Technica 95E Cartridge is also ~$50.

I have the M97xe and I really like it. For the price it's tough to beat. If anyone wants to give it a listen i may be able to loan it to the shop for a while if someone can loan me something back so I have a cart. to use.
