Title: Spending my kids' inheritance, and loving it!
Post by: papabearjew on January 05, 2016, 10:14:34 AM
Since my beloved Phase Linear 400 bought the farm I ordered an Emotiva XPA-2. I ordered Sunday on line directly from Emotiva. List is $900 but holiday sale is still in effect so it cost $719 with free shipping from TN. Getting my wife's thumbs up did involve groveling and of course as low as some of you might think this is pulling the "C" card. Whatever works!. Shipping weight is about 85 lbs so sneaking it in wasn't going to happen. Now I can't wait for its arrival. Once running and broken in fell free to pop in for an audition. It really should be a good match to my speakers. Still going to work on getting the Phase Linear working so I can either sell it or use it in a spare room.

Spending my inheritance?  More like "making sure my kids put me in a shitty nursing home".

Don't forget to change your signature!  When it comes in, I'll come over and set it up for you.  Don't lift it.

Don't worry about me lifting it. No way I'd chance it. I'm not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs forever!. That friggin amp weighs about 75 lbs.

I'm not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs

An old friend of mine got suspended from school when he and a buddy skipped class.  The teacher asked him "Where were you?"
He responded "in the bathroom".
She asked "why was he (the friend) with you?"
his response "I can't lift anything more than 10 lbs"

Nice amp, make sure you tell us what you think when you get it.  I  felt a little bad my old SYS led you down this path, but you did get a new amp in the end!

The SYS didn't cause the problem.  Someone failing to turn off the amp did :P

RT. It was totally my fault. The bulbs on the meters are all dead. The last couple burned out a couple months ago. The amp has no other indicator lamps so I thought it was turned off and pulled the patch cords that go from the pre outs to the amps in. Apparently that was a really bad idea!

Your son should be able to get the Phase Linear back up in no time...

I need to start sniffing glue so people quit volunteering me for things

Congrats on the new amp - it's only money and you won't burn the house down.

He is in an apartment building now.   There are probably hundreds of lives being saved.

I did that once with a Mac 2500 and a pair of XR 16s.  Blew one woofer cone right out of the basket-wires were shredded and there was no way it was being rebuilt.  I was able to locate an original replacement, but learned an expensive lesson.

Rebuilding a PL400 using Whiteoak and Don Imlay parts runs in the $450 range if I remember correctly.  That includes all new output transistors also and a new light bar.  May or may not include new power supply caps, I can look that up tomorrow is need be.  They are a killer amp after these upgrades.

Congrats PBJ on the new amp!

I may drop in to take a listen after Steve finishes the hook up!

Good luck with your new toy!

I'm familiar with the White Oak stuff, just can't justify putting that much into a 43 year old amp. Plus I already got my wife to give me her blessing on buying a new amp!

Once hooked up I'll let everyone know and I'll gladly give auditions.

Carl, I'm counting on your critique!

That costs more than the amp though.  I think the best bet at this point is to just get it running again and sell it.  Like PBJ said, it's 43 years old, so it's not worth fixing.  Man, I should start a health insurance company for audio equipment.

The Eagle has landed. My new Emo amp is here!. BJ will hook it up for me later today. Way too heavy for me to handle ~75 lbs. Very well packaged. I also ordered an Emo ET-3 which in conjunction with my wireless device will toggle the amp between standby and on by sending a trigger signal to the amp.

So BJ came over to set up my new amp and to have pizza. My wife has been sort of complaining about the size of my speakers. They are a good size; tall and wide. But they  sound incredible and we do have plenty of room for them. I keep saying when I'm gone she can get rid of them. That just kind of pisses her off. Anyway the conversation continues through dinner. I leave the room for a minute and when I return I hear BJ say to his mother "you know he's not going to get rid of his speakers". Now is that an awesome son or what?!  He always has my back.

I hooked up the Schiit SYS this evening and it does exactly what I want. Of course this time I did remember to turn off everything. Thanks RuralTom!

Enough with the blurry hints. Does the XPA-2 do the job or not?
