Title: System Updates!
Post by: Shayne on October 10, 2012, 04:47:47 PM
I've done enough upgrading that I figured a post may be in order.

Main system:
Marantz TT15-s1 Turntable (made by clearaudio)
Clearaudio Virtuoso cartridge (sent off to Soundsmith for the ruby cantilever, nude contact line stylus upgrade, still waiting on this)
Yaqin Ms-22B tube phono preamp
Nakamichi CD-4 (doesn't get any use)
Emotiva USP-1 Stereo Preamp
Emotiva XPA-2 Power Amp
Magnepan 1.6 speakers
2 Serpent Sound 12" subs (I build these myself. They use a dayton reference sub and 250 watt plate amp each)

Second system:
Pro-Ject Xpression III
AT 440Mla Cartridge
Onkyo A-9555 Integrated amp
Wharfedale Diamond 9.6 speakers
Serpent sound 8" powered sub

I've also completed a DIY audio rack for my main system as well as a DIY acrylic dust cover for my main turntable. Also, in the way of storage i've built two rolling record bins on casters that hold about 70 records each, built and finished a record shelf using 3/4" oak veneer plywood that should hold around 900-1000 lp's and a cd rack that I estimate will hold 150 cd's. I should try to post some pictures.

Now, i'm on the hunt for a pair of good listening chairs. HELP a brother out with some advice in this area. I've gone to every furniture store in my area and haven't found anything that fits the bill.

I knew that was coming! Here are a couple crappy cell phone shots. One is the system in place but I hadn't done any cable management. The other is the completed pic on the dustcover. This is my first time working with acrylic. It isn't gingko quality, but I have a total of about $48 invested in this cover. I'm happy with it. The seams look great from a couple feet away, if you look really close the seams have bubbles and I got some cement in some places I didn't want it.

I'll post some better camera shots tomorrow.

Very nice Shayne!  The subs look great.

I have an Emotiva USP-2 pre, X-DAC and XPA-2 amp. Like them all.

I'll bet all of that speaker interface moves a lot of air.   Nice

Actually MacGeek, it can be "delicate". If you play some jazz or acoustic music it's tame with a nice soundstage. If you put on some rock you can feel it pretty well. I was worried that the Magnepan's wouldn't do rock music well. They are just fine!

I'm playing with sub placement right now. I know you can't tell much from the pic, but I could use some suggestions.

I was noticing that if I walked around my room I would find pockets of loud, tight bass but when setting in the sweet spot the subs seemed much quieter. Right now I have the subs angled the same as the Maggies with the woofers facing to the outer walls of the room. Definitely more output but may be slightly bloated. Going to start fooling with some room treatments soon.

How do the Maggie's sound on rock w/o the subs?

It really depends a lot on placement and the production of the album. The more you can get them out from the wall, the bass gets better. Some albums (Uriah Heep, Magician's Birthday and Demons and Wizards) for example, sound really thin. A subwoofer can add some bottom to these thin recordings. A newer production, Opeth's album Heritage has a nice thick bass that doesn't need much supplement. My rig has no tone controls or EQ of any kind so I have to take the production of albums at face value.

Overall, the Maggie's alone wouldn't suit most typical rock listeners. I've found that your average rock listener likes to feel pounding bass. They won't really do that, but what they do is clean as hell. You have to hear them to know what i'm saying.
