Title: New office setup
Post by: paden501 on February 22, 2010, 12:52:00 PM
It's nothing terribly impressive, but here's my 'new' office setup.

It consists of a Yamaha CD-X3 CD player (courtesy of Tom), a Home-made 'Chu-Moy' headphone amplifier and eventually a pair of Shure SRH-440 Cans (ordering next week).

I know it's nothing special, but for just a couple of bucks in parts I can now listen to music at work without driving my cubicle neighbors nuts!

Here are some photos.

As you can see, I built the cMoy into the aluminum case that my Shure M97xe phono cartridge came in.  My original plan was to build it into an altoids tin (like so many others) but because I upgraded the power supply and input capacitor from the original spec, it would no longer fit into an Altoids tin.  The Shure case works nicely though and will allow me to add a wall outlet plug for power later.

Matt ;D, Have I Ever Told You How Smart You Are ? I Wouldn't Even Know The First Place To Begin To Put Something Together Like That.......

Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Blown Away With The Skills And Knowledge That You Matt, And Just About Everyone Here For That Matter, Possess.

I Wish That I Was So Fortunate....... :'(------BILL(BB3)

That is pretty nice. It's going to be cool to listen to something that YOU built.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Bill, the cMoy was actually pretty straight-forward to build. www.tangentsoft.net (http://www.tangentsoft.net) has a really good step-by-step tutorial that I referenced.  The thing even gives you the part numbers from Digikey to order and everything.   All I really had to do was drill the holes in the case and solder the parts where the diagram showed me to.

I'm sure that everyone here is capable of putting this one together.

Mike.

Give me a few days to listen to this setup before I get a sound review on it.  There are a lot of variables at play here and I honestly don't have much experience with headphone sound, so I need to keep my mind open for a while before I make an impression.  I know that a major thing holding this setup back right now are my cheap headphones.  I'm currently using an old pair of Sony MRD-G42 phones, which are of the cheap around the neck variety.  hopefully my Shure's arrive later this week or early next week.

What I have noticed so far is that SOURCE MATTERS A LOT in headphones, which is exactly why I brought the CD-X3 into play.  Last week I was just using my Lenovo laptop's cd tray and windows media player as a source, and it WAS NOT CUTTING IT!  Everything below 80hz was horribly distorted with or without the amp installed... it was just bad.  The bass-line during the intro to John Mayer's 'Clarity' (from the album 'Heavier Things') was like tin cans full of rocks being rattled.

With the CD-X3 in play, the distortion goes away, but the bass presence and visceral impact gets lost a little bit.... is it the amp, the phones or the source?  At this point I have no idea.
