Title: Boston Acoustics A-100s for Sale
Post by: schwarcw on August 05, 2011, 09:54:56 PM
I have a nice pair of Boston Acoustics A-100s.  Walnut finish, the woofer has been refoamed by Forum member gdv (George).  I am asking $100, or best offer.  Local pickup in Monroeville.

Do You mean Boston Acoustics A-100s ?
I don't know of an Advent A-100.

The A100s are a kind of more modern replacement for the original Large Advent.

Do you know if George used the "correct" surrounds? I know there are several knock-off surrounds that are out there for the Bostons. If he did, I'm interested. :)

I'm not trying to be a d!@k, but, I've read a few articles on what happens when people use incorrect surrounds on these. I've never owned Bostons, and I'd like to give it a try.

SD,
I did NOT get the repair surrounds from Boston Acoustics!  But from Parts Express...  I have been re-surrounding (correctly!)   :) speakers for about 30+ years...  The woofers were 10" drivers and I replaced them with 10" surrounds...  They are not like the old Advent woofers, which you must use the "correct" kit...

Just curious, what happens when one uses the "INCORRECT" surrounds?

MacGeek,
I have a pair of A-40's...  But I'm not planning on selling them...   ;)

Everyone, enjoy the day!!!

From what I read on AK, they can be too stiff, which could have an effect on sensitivity.. Is there any truth to that?

I'm definitely not an expert, but, it made sense when I read it. I'm actually in class at the moment, I'll add to this later. I meant no disrespect George. I was under the impression that surrounds have parameters other than size.

@SD

I've read that the "correct" surrounds have a angled cross-sectional area.  But, my opinion is it is probably much ado about nothing.  When I refoamed the A-100s Tom got from me, I ordered them from Orange County Speakers.

Carl,

I highly doubt the surrounds I got from OCS were "correct".  But they sounded very good to me after being refoamed.  I only sold them because I at the time owned way to many speakers (still do I guess).  Someone should snap these up at that price.

SunnyDaze,
Wasn't it you looking at those Boston A-70's on Craig's List?  The 100's are bigger, but there is no comparison in BETTER sound quality - IMHO...

For $60 I'm thinking of buying them, and I have WAY TOO many speakers now!!!    :o

Yes sir, that was me. I've been researching the entire Boston range of the era. The A-100's are described as their first "no compromise" speaker in the range.

I've never owned any Boston speakers. I want to see if "Boston Bland" actually exists. I'm a 2-way and 2.5 way speaker fanatic, and I'm interested in seeing how a 2 way design with a 10" low frequency driver performs.

As most of us are, I'm in the "too many speakers" category myself. I actually had a bright idea today.. It involves decent amount of gear that I don't really use, ePay, and a new set of MMG's.

My friend owned a pair of these many years ago.  I liked them a lot.  I would get them..or at least
listen to them.  In regards to surrounds...yes is a difference.  It has to do with the compliance, roll size,
angle or straight edge etc.  Here is one example:  I own a pair of NEW LARGE ADVENTS.  The original
surround was very "loose" and springy.  Someone refoamed  with generic surrounds (much stiffer) before I bought them.  This raised the original Fs one one of the drivers from the original value (approx 25 HZ) to over 40 HZ.  Hmmm...so you would think that ruined them huh.  Actually...nope.  Cant hear a difference at all. Not sweeping test tones, not with music, nothing.  They play perfectly. So, in "theory" they changed but with a constant changing, dynamic music input there is no difference at all.  Dont get too hung up on the surrounds until you listen to them.  I bet money you will like them.  And unless the original equipment mfg offers surrounds as a replacement part most vintage speakers from the 80s will have "generic" surrounds.  But let it bug you unless you hear obvious abnomalities while they are playing.

I have a pair of A-40s I bought used from a dealer for the price of repairing the woofers, due to bad surrounds, when his customer abandoned them.  The woofers were replaced with new Boston drivers with rubber surrounds.  I have not measured them, but they sound very similar to another pair belonging to a family member, with foam surrounds.  If the A-100s sound OK, they are.

Greetings interesting read, and I appreciate the technical contributions of my fine forum friends.

These speakers have great cosmetics and sound pretty damn good.  These are two way floor stander speakers.  We've had threads about eh $100 system.  You would be hard pressed to setup a system with these speakers at the center and spend another $40 for one of the receivers that we had on auction to come up with a better $100 system.  Somebody has a friend or college student that needs a good pair of speakers.
