Title: Foam speaker grill...
Post by: gdv on September 26, 2014, 02:50:35 PM
I'm looking for an ECONOMICAL source for foam speaker grills...  Maybe something like this...  http://www.ebay.com/itm/POLYTONE-FOAM-SPEAKER-GRILL-or-GRILLE-NEW-NOS-Factory-Original-/291026464631?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43c2876f77 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/POLYTONE-FOAM-SPEAKER-GRILL-or-GRILLE-NEW-NOS-Factory-Original-/291026464631?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43c2876f77)

or the JBL type/style foams...  There may NOT be a economical foam grill, just checking, as I have not found any yet...  Dimensions are:  17-3/4" high x 8-3/4" wide...

I picked up a free set of speakers for a give away system and don't want to spend $100 for the foam grills...

thanks!!!

You can always spray-paint some eggcrate... You didn't say it had to look good!

I doubt egg crate is very acoustically transparent.

Especially painted.

Two possibilities...

1. You may find something cheap at the Army Navy store on Bus 22 in Monroeville.   I bought some foam there once a while back.

2.   Check hardware stores for generic HVAC "pre-filter" material.   If you find a sheet big enough, it is cheap and works pretty well.

I agree...  Eggcrate is NOT acoustically transparent...  And painting it would make it even less so...  and for the record, I would like it to look OK...

joann fabrics sells black grill cloth.  one of the ladies working there knew exactly what i wanted and guided me right to it.  you can then make a frame out of thin dowel rods
and stretch  the fabric over the frame and glue it tight.

i did this on a set of "Fourier 6"  speakers a decade ago.  looked pretty damn good.
i held the frame on with velcro
