Hosting an Audio Geeks meeting at my home Saturday night Feb 1st... send me a PM and I'll provide the address. I live south in McMurray/ Peters Twp.
Please bring music or media to play/ share etc ! And you are welcome to test / bring equipment to plug into system #2 ....
I have two systems; system #1 is a pretty good (IMHO) 7.2 surround sound system with a very nice ClearAudio turntable/ cartridge, a decent Technics 770 CD player and a Bluray.... it can also accept Apple media players. No additions or switch outs to this one please.... tweak away though and bring any albums, CDs, videos etc to put it through its paces! I think you'll be surprised at how musical it is and movies are just awesome. You are welcome to roll tubes through the Jolida JD9 phono pre-amp... Marantz SR6005, KEF mains/ center and rear surrounds, Dalquist DQ-20s for side surrounds and an HSU VTF15 subwoofer.
System#2 Have at it!... very nice 7.1 surround sound receiver with pre-outs, an OK Thorens 318 turntable, dbx dx5 CD player and Denon 3 head cassette deck and cheap bluray player. I've had a blast starting to build this system... Marantz SR6007 receiver, vintage Harman Kardon Fifty main speakers and NHT SuperOne surrounds all around w/ DIY subwoofer...
I'll have a Spin Clean record cleaner set up.
Also, if you want a copy of the radio station play list (MP3 format) I have, bring a .5 gig drive... it will take a few hours to copy!
Bring something to drink if you can... good beer is always appreciated!
I have about 700 albums and a few CDs and cassettes....
-
count me in! i'll PM you later. definitely bringing something to check out the clearaudio!
-
Does system 1 have DVD-A? DTS? I have a couple things you should hear.
-
Sorry, I read system one and assumed the other would be two channel. Does either one have DVD-A or DTS?
-
PM sent
-
Actually, both systems have full DTS and both are 7.2/ 7.1 surround respectively. I have not tried to play a DVD- A on either system.
System #1 LG 690 bluray player should be able to handle anything....
System #2 cheap VISIO bluray player:
Your player can play CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-RWs,
and DVD-Rs recorded with UDF or ISO9660 format.
Writeable DVDs (DVD-RW, DVD-R) must be
finalized (VR mode only).
Your player supports AVCHD playback on
writeable media (DVD±R, DVD±RW) only.
Supported file extensions
.mp3 (high bit-rate or variable bit-rate .mp3 files
may not play back correctly)

You are welcome to play either system in any mode (direct, stereo, surround etc) with any media you can play or bring/ patch cord in... both receivers have a great many inputs and out puts. I would prefer though that you not patch amps into system #1....I really don't want to mess with reconnecting those speakers and shifting everything around etc.... And yfou care welcome to tweak away with any settings etc except the Audyssey profile and channel levels in system #1.... FYI system #1 uses a Marantz SR6005 and #2 uses a Marantz SR6007....
System #2 you are welcome to change any settings and add anything you would like (including amps lol) ....it is easily accessible.. might want to bring appropriate patch cords/ hdmi etc with the equipment... It is also hooked directly to my computer so anything you want / need to hook to that is good to go also....

Greetings Jim!
Thanks for offering to host such an event. I will have a better idea of my schedule in a couple of weeks. I hope that I can make it. Thanks again!
Carl
-
Just an FYI, I've hosted two previous winter time " music/ vinyl" nights at the house.... and I've also invited those attendees... I think you'll really enjoy my diverse group of friends, all of whom enjoy music and tend to bring some very good and interesting things to listen to. As sent:

I like it that Jim allows cassettes and excludes disco and country music. That works!

I can only assume that Jim isn't listening to the right Country and Disco. Both genres have good and bad (though admittedly a lot more bad than good, still the good is there).

True that.. but they are often enough real 'dividers' genre-wise. It's be a lot dicey proposition, in my book, if he was looking at Rock, Jazz, Country and Disco!

I agree also, but it will come down to personal taste in either of those genres.
-
You guys are too funny lol! If you want, we can have a country and disco night..... just not this one night! maybe in the Spring or Summer....
Personally I like Jazz, Blues, Rock, Motown, Alternative.... throw in a little Blue Grass maybe a bit of folk.. even some classical and Latin music.
I lived through disco and survived, even bartended at a huge mega popular place (lots of stories that the wife has never heard) ... but once was enough lol and just never acquired a taste for country, although I admire some of the voices and skills... I do like to hear a bit of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson once in a while though.
-
Dwight Yoakum on vinyl is surprisingly close to an audiophile experience.
-
My wife & I got married in 1977, in time for the disco era. We took a class in disco dancing at CCAC Boyce Campus. I had 2 leisure suits, platform shoes and of course my iconic jewfro. During one of my smooth moves I knocked my wife on her ass. She never made me sign up for dancing classes again
-
Thanks, PBJ. I have been asked to take a class more than once and will remember your way out.
-
I am not afraid to admit that I still, at times, listen to the Bee Gees, KC & the sunshine band, and yes - Abba. And I like Kenny Rogers' music. That is the sad truth.
-
Abba sucks.
If When I go to hell, it'll be nothing but Dancing Queen playing on repeat in 128k mp3 format on bose speakers. I'm already pissed, and I probably have at least another 30 or 40 years more to be pissed about it.
-
MacGeek...Glad to help
Captain...I'm with you. My favorite Kenny Rogers album is all duets with various female singers. I have the LP but it's on Spotify if you want to check it out
-
BJ...Glad to see your alive and well. Before I "go" I'm going to erase all my hundreds of tapes and record nothing but ABBA & The Village People on them just for you
-

Disco still sucks and I'm no country fan, but I have both (as well as Kenny Rogers and a few others that don't come to mind). How about Bert Kaempfert, the New Christy Minstrels, Sing Along with Mitch and the TJB. I watched about half of Mama Mia before I realized it's all ABBA music (and I have them on a Laser disc). And, let's not forget the Baha Marimba Band and Pete Fountain to name a couple more.
-

Yes. Sad.
I was thinking more like Chic, Taste of Honey, or Earth Wind and Fire for disco or for country, Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne or Jason Isbell.
-
Abba sucks.
QFT!

I heard he likes The Village People. >:D
-
BJ: Abba replies: "If you change your mind, I'm the first in line, Honey I'm still free, Take a chance on me!"

I do like Earth Wind and Fire and Average White Band etc ... but don't know if I'd throw EWF in with disco.... certainly not along with Donna Summers and Abba ( I even hate typing the word Abba) lol Got more than enough disco bartending 3-4 nights a week .... use to make at least $150 to $200 a night in tips though... people would be lined up around the block to get in and 10 deep at the bar which was over 70 ft long.... and the place was in Elyria OH west of Cleveland....called Uncle Vics! Great job bartending at a place like that for a young single guy! lol It was all free pour and they'd test your pouring skills once a week... off more than an ounce in ten shots and you looked for another job, but they paid $.75 an hour more than anywhere else.... hard work in my platforms lol

Did a pre-geek meeting inspection of Jim's setup tonight. The Clearquest turntable with the Maestro cart through Marantz receiver/KEF speakers sounds amazing. Listened to a very unique vinyl recording, Duets w Rob Wasserman playing bass. Amazing recording (listening to it again right now on my system).
The garage set up has a pair of Harman Kardon towers I had never seen or read about before - they sound very very nice. Jim has a Denon 3-head cassette deck going that sounds pretty good to me :P:

Very nice - thank you for the listen Jim - will report on the Soundcraftsmen and the Yamaha tuner soon.

I didn't realize that "Duets" had a vinyl issue. It was one of our reference CDs in the store back when it came out.
-
Mark
The cover states of this Duets LP a label stating "custom pressing" - so it must be super-rare. The listing of tracks printed in said cover does not match the actual songs as cut in the vinyl, to give you an idea of the one-off-ness. The recording is amazingly good.
-
I'd like to see that one in person. Can you bring it to a meeting? I'm hoping to make Jim's in February.
-
I'll bring the album the next time I'm able to make a Saturday night meeting at the shop... not tonight though. My pleasure CaptainTapeDeek.... glad you like my "mid-fi" set ups... lots of compromises, as we all have to do..like no coffins in the house lol . have just tried to make the most of what I have... When the weather breaks you'll have to take the Tuono for a spin.
I hope you guys bring some equip to patch in... those HK Fifty's could use a sampling of real power.... and some good tunes etc. of course.
-
Oh, it's your record. I thought it was CTDs. Hopefully I can see it at your place. I know I haven't RSVP'd, waiting to get my final schedule.
-
Count me in!
Can I bring a date?
She's hot, wild, and loves music.
-
I'd like to burn some CDs of some of my favorite LPs and bring them.
-
you are welcome to use whatever equipment I have or to hook up what you bring in the garage system. That's where the computer is along with the Marantz SR6007, a decent Technics 1200 turntable and the Verizon hub. You might want to bring a copy of a good program to burn CDs or you'll need to download one when you get here... I only have ITunes and Windows Media Player .... Also, someone better than me will need to look at the computer settings to get the computer to recognize the receiver.... The computer will play through it, I have it hooked up via an optical cable, but I've not spent any time trying to get the inverse. Make sense?
Jim
-
Jim,
What time do things get started on Saturday?
Scott
-
Way past your bedtime! ;D
-
I have to take the mother in law out for her bday dinner that night is why I ask.
-
Are you going 8W? It would be nice to meet you.
-
anytime after 7:30 will be going late... two years ago the party broke up at 4:00am, but last year women were invited (couples) and it broke up at around 1
FYI my computer died this morning... won't even boot in safe mode! will try and get it fixed in time...
-
OK. Since I have a date with the mother in law, it is pretty iffy on me being able to make it.
-
I'd love to meet y'all, put some names to faces, here some great tunes.. alas, I'll have to wait until the next 'AG' meeting!
-
Are you going 8W? It would be nice to meet you.
The plan as of now is to attend. We have a birthday party beforehand, so, I'm not 100% sure how the timing will play out.
-
the main computer hard drive died... being replaced etc. by tomorrow noon. i'll do my best to have it up to snuff by Sat evening... regardless, it will be functional.
-
Got room for one more? I got a kitchen pass for the evening
-
I just found out that the b-day party we'll be attending is on Baptist near Caste village and it starts at 6.
I'm assuming we'll be at Jim's by 8-ish.
Tom, Anders, or Barejoo - Will any of you three be present? I have an Adcom 5300 of Rural Tom's that needs repair. I was asked by him to drop it off at the shop. I figured this might suffice.
-
Jim - I may retrieve your repaired CD player tomorrow from Tom's. If so will drop off Saturday in advance of the meeting. If it is not ready I will carefully move the CD-80 to your house (or borrow Tom's transport locks tomorrow).
GDV - I have a Sony turntable in my car that I will deliver to Tom tomorrow when I go pick the Sunfire.
Frank - I have the cash for your quasi-Krell amp ready in an envelope. The bills are marked and some of them are really good fakes. Will leave with Tom.
-
8-I live near the shop and can run a delivery if need be. I plan to be at Jims
-
I plan to be there but I need the address.

Thanks MacGeek!
I plan to be there but I need the address.
PM Pittsburgh Jim for his address and info, Anders. If he doesn't get back to you by Saturday let me know and I'll forward it to you.
-
Please remove my contact info from this thread. I've
Responded to everyone with contact info pm if still needed
FYI computer is still dead after $200 repair it
Will not be functional for the party. Sorry
-
Where did you take it? I'm a computer tech :) Have Anders bring it home with him tomorrow and I'll take a look?
-
Please say you didn't bring it to the Geek Squad.
-
I'll take $150 to not fix your computer. Sounds like a deal.
-
I think Alexis and I are both coming down with the stomach flu that's circulating. Unless you want to hear my subwoofer impression being emitted from the bathroom for a vast majority of the evening, I'm going to have to take a rain check.
George - I'll get your stuff to the shop or in the hands of someone local to you by midweek.
Tom - I'll get your amp to the shop by midweek also.
Sorry folks. As Falcon so wisely said, "The asshole is the boss of the body."
-
Elijah, sorry to hear you and Alexis are getting sick! :( Thanks for getting the Nak CR-1A! No hurry... Just let me know status...
I need to figure how how I'm going to get the Sony TT, Captn tape deek via Rev dropped off at the shop too... Maybe I'll have to pay Anders to bring to his house so I can pick up! ;)
Hope everyone has a great time tonight, & thanks again Jim for hosting... Sorry I can't make it either...
George
-
George, I am going tonight and I believe Pepe is as well. If I can run courier for you on something I would be happy to.
-
Mark, thanks for the offer...
Latest I know is that 8 watts is sick of me, I mean he is sick! :) He has the tape deck at his place...
Also, there is a basic Sony TT at the shop for me... Making a system for a female friend... Not sure if the Sony will make it to the party... It may walk or ride to the party! ;D If it does, please bring it back with you!
Thanks again for the offer...
George
-
lol no geek squad. local guy in Canonsburg that i've used before. he had a helper now... sadly. and I still have the blue screen of death.
so if anyone who needs one will have to bring a laptop or something else.. sorry. I can still play usb drives and any apple product...
-
room for at least 3 cars up on the parking pad by my garage without blocking anyone in. in the court directly in front of my house, park nose in not along the circle ...four or five cars will fit. And normally along the rest of the court and street.
-
Not sure if the Sony will make it to the party... It may walk or ride to the party! ;D If it does, please bring it back with you!
Thanks again for the offer...
George
If it ends up in my possession, I will let you know.
-
Not going to make it tonight, maybe next time.
-
Lets see some pics.
-
I should have sent a camera with Anders!
-
You know, I don't think I saw anyone taking pictures.
I had a very nice time. Many thanks to our host. It was a pleasure to meet you, Jim.

Nobody gave me a table.
-
Jim, you asked about my table. I have a QL-A7, which is the same as the QL-7 linked below but with the addition of an optical end of record sensor and auto lift. Not auto return, just auto lift. It is completely decoupled from the drive mechanism and the arm. Other than that, these links tell the story pretty well...

Jim,
Thanks for hosting a great party last night. Met some folks and heard some new to me music. I took at least one picture of Pepe eating pizza.

Good group of peeps gathered in the garage listening to CDs and vinyl. The CDs were played on a DBX DX5 - interesting player (recently recapped by Tom and team) with an 'ambience' DSP control that feeds difference signals to the left and right to create a spaciousness effect, DAIR - a transient-enhancing DSP trick, and Compression, to control dynamic range (never saw any of them before on a CD player). Ed's famous SL1200 was there replacing the Thorens, which is now for sale. It sounded great as expected.
Other folks (Anders plus other folks) were upstairs with the higher end system and the amazing Clearaudio turntable and KEF speakers. Good meeting!!
I stayed close to the pizza:

Thanks everyone for coming! Had a great time
At my own party, which is unusual lol. Really
Appreciated everyone bringing some great music
To share... Very cool! And I didn't have to eyeball
Everything... Lots of trust there lol ! And thanks to
All for treating my non audio geek friends so well!
-
And guys , you do not have to wait for a party to come by for
A listen, as long as you bring some tunes to share.
-
Thanks, I enjoyed the party.
Hope you like the CDs I gave you.
Let me know if you have any questions about any of them.
