Title: iphone comments...
Post by: gdv on April 29, 2011, 03:14:56 PM
My (verizon) cell plan has expired and am thinking of going with AT&T's $50 3G iphone...  Seems like a no brainer to me, as I was planning to buy a ipod touch anyway...

Am I missing something?  Will use as a cell phone and touch, mainly...

Thanks for your comments...
George

I got the Iphone 4 and so far am loving it. Fairly easy to use and versatile enough. Plus the retina screen display is awesome. Almost went with the Thunderbolt but 4 g is gonna be a while plus it is a larger phone.

If you really want an Iphone then you should get the Iphone 4.  Look at the differences here:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare-iphones/ (http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare-iphones/)

The Iphone 4 has more ram, better screan, better camera with a flash, and does Hd vidoe recording to just name a few upgrades.

$50 for the 3GS is tempting but if I were going to buy an Iphone I would get the 4.  Plus, why would you want to go over to that crappy ATT network?

But, you will have no money left to go to Starbucks with your Mac, and the apple that lights up!

You are smoking crack:

ATT Prices:
450 Monthly minutes $39.99
4 GB Monthly data plan $45.00
Unlimited TXT $20.00
Total Monthly cost $104.99

VZW Price:
450 Monthly minutes with unlimited TXT $59.99
Unlimited Data plan is $29.99
Total Monthly cost is $89.98

Look it up on each website if you don't believe me.

I've got an iPhone 4 on VZW. I have zero complaints. Coverage is awesome. Internet is relatively quick. mp3's sound awesome.

The 3GS is inherently inferior to the 4, remember, you're going to have this phone for 2 years. Also, most app developers are no longer catering to the 3GS.

I hope you have not made a decision yet on jumping ship from Verizon to ATT to get a cheep out of date Iphone 3gs.  I was just on Verizon's web site and they now offer "Certified Pre Owned" Iphone 4 16gb for $149.

So lets do some quick math:

2 years with ATT will cost $2519.76 plus $50 so total cost will be $2569.76
2 years with Verizon will cost $2159.52 Plus $149 so total cost will be $2308.52

So going with ATT and getting the older phone will cost you over $250 more and you will pay even more if you go over your 4GB montly data limit.

I agree with Tom H that generally speaking the Verizon iPhone is the better choice (unlimited data is a very cool option to have, coverage is better,  and it is economically more attractive).

Except if you travel outside the US with any frequency and expect the iPhone to work as a phone. Then you are screwed with Verizon.  The Verizon version of the iPhone does not connect to cell networks outside the US - there you have to find a wifi spot and use Skype.

Then again,  AT&T's international roaming is very expensive,  so you may as well not use it.

Glad you got all that figured out Tom!!!! I just bought for the service coverage..... 8)
