What is the best way to connect a headphone amp? I have my Schiit Valhalla connected to one two of my Carver C-5 pre and volume set at about 75% on the C-5. Does this sound right or should volume on C-5 be changed or the whole thing hooked up differently? Thx

I would have thought that you would use a fixed output like a tape out and just use the volume on the Valhalla to control your cans.

Yep! The tape out is a good choice because the C-5 volume won't affect the tube amp. If the Carver has an extra set of variable preouts, the volume control on the C-5 could be set to 40% - 50% and use the headphone volume to suit your taste.

I have devices attached to both tape loops. That's why I used the second preout (zone 2) set it a bit over half way and used the headphone amp to control volume. Is the output of a tape out the same as the pre out turned to max? I just never used a headphone amp before. Thx

I suspect that varies from pre to pre. Best suggestion I can give is for you to check the volume from a tape out then set zone 2 to a similar level, whatever that may be.
