Title: Reveneering speaker cabinets
Post by: vstarkwell on July 04, 2010, 04:26:11 PM
I just picked up a pair of Polk Audio Monitors 10A's (thanks Tom & Sean) and the cabs could use some reveneering. Is this hard to do? is it expensive? Any suggestion, ideas etc would be appreciated.

By the time you buy all the tools and material needed, it would most likely be cheaper to have them done by a pro. However, if you are set on doing it yourself, there are any number of good how to books out there.

Peel off the vinyl, sand the cabinets, do some body work on them, prime the bastards and drop off at a body shop to spray with black lacquer. :o

Just a random thought.  They would look nice like that. ;D

Veneering is a lot of fun.  Not as easy as it looks though. Like F1-nut says,  a pro will do it faster and better.  I had a blast doing mine.  Some thoughts:

- Figure out how to figure out the direction of the grain and do not cut against it.  It may change direction along a cut length.
- Remove the vynil covering the existing wood/MDF first
- Avoid iron-ons if you can
- Cut the veneer as close to the actual piece size as you can then sand off the edge with a file
- Pay attention to the direction of the woodgrain as you are laying it I f'd up on that  front though they don't look too bad

Brett: That looks awesome. Are those the Model 19s?  I hope to check those out live soon. Veneer the Etons!

PS:  Edit - those are the Klipshorns!  My bad.
