Post by: Falcon on April 22, 2010, 12:45:10 AM
Anybody have any info on these? They are awesome speakers. Very well made. sound with cheap rat shack woofer is great, don't know if I am going to refoam originals or not.   I may have Tom re-foam them.

 Any info?

Well, it is 5:45 AM and I have been listening to these all night.. WOW  :o :o :o
Fantastic speakers, everything is superb.. Sound stage, image, you name it..
I am enjoying CD's I have not listened to in awhile. It is like hearing them for the first time..
I think these may be keepers. I found out these are by Winslow Burhoe, who designed E.P.I. and Genesis speakers. He did a real good job with these. Made from 1977-1982 and cost $800.00 new. Definitely better than any E.P.I speakers I have heard.

Guess I have to get Tom to re-foam the original woofers now.

Winslow Burhoe also was a key designer of the Energy 22

From the web:

About The Author:

Win Burhoe is a world class speaker designer who has worked side by side with Acoustic Research founder Edgar Villchur and who has also founded EPI naming Villchur as its President and speaker co-designer. Villchur was instrumental in developing the air spring tweeter as he was also responsible for inventing the air spring woofer or acoustic suspension as it became known.

This principle allowed for use of a smaller cabinet that had to be air-tight {no leaks!} as the woofer became a piston lowering frequency response to well below what an equivalent vented system would allow. Although acoustic suspension types were less efficient they introduced into the homes of many an octave or two lower in the deep bass region what people might otherwise have not been accustomed to. Win Burhoe dedicates the book to this great crafter and friend.

Burhoe himself has designed speakers for Genesis, Synergy, Energy, Burhoe Acoustics and lately for his newly founded Direct Acoustics co. which features a pair of its top-of-the-line model for the average home's main listening room known as the "Silent Speaker". Burhoe has been in the business since the early 60's.
