I just got an email from my dad... His NAD cd player died and he's looking for a replacement. He's leaning towards a Marantz Sa-8003. That means he's looking in the $1000 dollar range... What should he get?
-
What is he going to do with the NAD? Parts is Parts. 8)
-
I'm on it, don't you worry 8)
-
He should look at the Jolida or Rega Apollo.
-
+1 for the Jolida. Love it. :o
-
I second the Jolida.
-
The Jolida is a great choice. I would like to try one of these Bada cd player's also. It has two sets of outputs, one uses tubes, one uses Burr Brown op amps. Looks interesting. http://www.pacificvalve.us/BDHD22.html (http://www.pacificvalve.us/BDHD22.html)
There is some others on this site worth looking at also.

I've heard the Jolida...gets my vote!!!
-
I think I'm getting him swayed towards the jolida, but his latest consern/excuse is that living in Erie there are no good tube repairmen... bla
-
what about a dac? that way you can hook in a dvd player/computer anything with digital output and it is dedicated to digtal/analog conversion. you can find some good used transports around too if you want a solid one.
-
I've actually suggested used with a good dac to him, but i think he just wants new... and good. The sad thing is he's really not going to listen to it that often. In his older age he's spent less and less time listening to music. I'm hoping if he gets the jolida he'll catch the bug again.
-
Does it have to be new or would he consider used as he'd get more for his money buying used.
The Jolida, at a minimum, requires upgrading from the crappy stock tubes and a good aftermarket power cord. Further mods make it even better.
-
ok, well he ordered the jolida. I'll be in Erie this weekend for his xmas party to check it out.
-
Excellent choice!!! ;)
-
Both of you will be pleased! :D :D :D
-
Great choice. You won't be disappointed.
And you can get a workout just lifting the remote also :o
-
I too like that one hell of a cd player had it at CF09 Tom can tell you how it sounded with my system! Eddie!
-
What would one expect to pay for a jolida?
-
New, $900.00.
Used, +/- $500.00
New modded, depends on the mod. $1300 to $1900.00.
Used modded, too many variables.
-
Those Jolidas sure are beautiful alright. I'm jealous.------BILL
-
The Jolida quit working on him already. That's 2 NAD cd players and now a Jolida that have died prematurely on him. >:(
-
Is he running good or better power conditioners. Three going down make me wonder.
-
No power conditioner, but it's new construction with a dedicated 20A going to the stereo.
-
The Jolida quit working on him already.
...something is DEFINITELY WRONG!!!! Noone has that kind of luck. How did the players quit? Do they still power up??? Does the cd still spin??? Gotta need for the info!!!!! ???

Both NAds slowly went. Basically started with tracking problems and ended with not being able to play cds. My dad told me the Jolida wasn't working right, so when I was in Erie 2 weekends ago I had it playing. It was playing fine, but there was noise (like a hum) coming from the player. Then it just shut off and wouldn't come back on. It's under warrantee, so as long as he makes contact it should be taken care of... but knowing my dad, he'll wait a year and then he'll be screwed...

Good CD players are -- good.
Things are changing.
To save words, I tried to explain it here - http://yardcrap.typepad.com/yardcrap/2010/08/computer-audio-for-everyone.html (http://yardcrap.typepad.com/yardcrap/2010/08/computer-audio-for-everyone.html)
The best bet these days is to put your money into a better DAC.
Solid mechanical CD players can be found on ebay - cheap. You may already have one. Look for one with a digital output.
Put your money into a better DAC. Those old high dollar CD players can't match up to even mid level DACs out there today.
Buy a solid Cd player, and put your money into a better DAC.
For the price of many CD players, you can buy a better DAC and use the left over to build a computer player.
