Vintage Pioneer SX-838 receiver for parts - $10 (East)
If anyone is interested, this is listed in Pittsburgh Craigs List...
I have nothing to do with this add... :)

I picked this up last night. It's in excellent shape cosmetically. Seems to be built really well. It has the original pre/main jumpers in place. There is also a small RCA cable jumper that goes from the tape 1 PB to the tape 2 record input. All the meter and dial face lamps are burned out. The owner said he was getting no output to the speakers on some sources and very little on others. Any suggestions on what to look at first?

You should clean the switches and pots with deoxit, before you can start trouble shooting.

I think that I gave that unit to George several years ago. I was having some problems with it. I guess he never got around to fixing it. When it worked, it was an exceptional unit. It's worth fixing!!

Good suggestion! My first thought as well.

Does George also go by the name "Mac"? And if so did you also give him that sweet Marantz receiver?

FYI... "gdv" = "George" that Mr "schwarcw" spoke of...
I remember the Marantz 2230, which I fixed/replaced the on/off switch and still have, but not the pioneer SX-838?
I do have a Pioneer SX-939 that is working nicely... :)
All have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend!!!

Hmmmm! I wonder what I did with the Pioneer?? I know that I gave it to somebody.
I'm glad to hear that you still have the 2230 that I gave you. I loved that receiver. I bought it around 1974 while I was in college.
I bought another one about four years ago and gave it to my son. He uses it with his Polk Monitor 5's and it sounds great!
I hope all is well George!

Carl

Carl,
You "COULD" have given it to me... And if you did, it has been in "vintage audio heaven" for many years, I may have gotten a few parts from it before it "ascended!" ;)
I just don't remember that one... Many pieces of audio equipment have passed my way over the years...
I have a spare 6" midbass from an old Polk monitor 5, do you want it? If not, I was going to give it to Tom (OCCD)

LOL! I know what you mean.
Give the woofer to Tom, he was asking me if I had any extras lying around. I'm glad to see that you are still loving audio!
