Title: Passing up gear regrets
Post by: scorpio333 on March 21, 2016, 11:44:21 PM
Probably a lot of good, interesting stories out there on something you waffled on and it got away. Maybe we can exercise those demons or renew the hunt to find another one.

For me, I'm regretting not picking up the free Wurlitzer jukebox a month or so ago. It's big and heavy, but I got a few strong friends and I've cleaned the garage. Even if it was broken, I'm fairly mechanically inclined and for electrical work, I haven't been shocked yet. The more I think about how nostalgic they are and what the latest jukeboxes look like, I want to preserve a part of history AND put 45's in it. I rarely listen to any of the 45's I have, too much like work. For now it's a fun pursuit.

I regret that you didn't get that jukebox too.

For myself, I regret that I passed on a pair of AR3s at the thrift when I was first getting back into this.   I had no idea.   I didn't have a cell phone at the time to research them.   I just thought they were kind of odd looking old speakers.

Somebody left that thrift very happy, but it wasn't me.

My old boss offered me some McIntosh amplifiers on the cheap.  I believe he got them for FREE .  This was before I really knew anything about audio and was running a freebie pioneer receiver that had seen better days.  Anyway his daughter came home and did some research on the amps and he ended up selling them to someone in philly for around $1500 dollars.  Took his wife on vacation with the cash.    :-\

I also have a lot of sellers regret after selling my Vintage Hifi modded C-1.  It performed so well with my M-500t, match made in heaven.

I solidly, sorrowfully regret selling the McCormack DNA 1 power amp.  Karma,  please put another one in my destiny,  preferable at a local Goodwill store or at a estate sale managed by a sweet old lady.

I also regret selling the Otari MX-5050 II.  I should have transplanted the hubs from the MX-50 to the 5050 (the 5050 has reel table mounted on hubs that require a compression locking nut - it is a pain IMO. I miss the ability to calibrate bias with internal tones and the cool 2-track/4-track head switch capability.   Should have bought the one StephenWVU had.

There, confession complete.

There are only a few things I regret selling.  A Tandberg TR 1055 from the early 1970s, a Mac MX 117 tuner/Pre-amp from the early 1980s and a Thorens TD125 MkII with an SME arm, also from the 1970s.  I'll buy back any of them If I find models in proper condition at a fair price and watch the sites regularly, in search of.......

Please think of me if you find any of these.

I should add there are a number of pieces that were lost, stolen or damaged beyond reasonable repair due to shipping incidents or moving, but at least I was fairly compensated for those and used the proceeds to buy more stuff.  And, then there is the list of stuff I have owned that I am glad to be ride of because of poor performance or function.

few regrets on equipment I passed up, but I do regret selling a few:  the tops of the "stupid sale list" are my Microseiki turntables ( especially the single arm model with the separate power supply, not so much the three arm model) and the stupidest sale ever had to be letting my Yamaha NS 1000 with ebony cabinets ( made at the Yamaha piano factory) go...  kick, kick, kick

Most of my regrets revolve around purchases rather than passes....  so impulsive sometimes!
