Some yuk-yuk posted a Pioneer SX-650 on CL last month for $50. I needed something with a phono preamp and a S/N ratio >70db to test 'tables as I work on them. I live in Rostraver, near California, PA. This idiot lives in Heidelberg. I call him after class to re-confirm our appointment. He assures me he'll be present at the time and place that we agreed on.
I drive the hour from Cal U to Heidelberg. As I'm sitting at Damon's, my phone rings.
*RING - RING - RING*
Idiot: "Elijah?"
Me: "Yes..."
Idiot: "It's Bruce, with the receiver."
Me: "Hello there. I'm a little early, but I'm here."
Idiot: "Oh... Uh... Well, I think I'm going to give it to my uncle."
Me: "Excuse me?"
Idiot: "Is that okay?"
Me: "No. Not at all. I just drove 40 miles to make this purchase."
Idiot: "Forty miles eh?"
Me: "Yes. I explained to you earlier that I was coming from California, PA. That's a fair distance away."
Idiot: "Oh... Well... um.... Is it okay if I do this?"
Me: "No. Not at all, but what can I do? Have a good evening."
*END*

I've bought a couple items off the list and you are pretty much dependent on the other person finishing the transaction. I nearly lost a sub after driving 2 hours to pick it up. It is a guessing game. Sorry you had a BUM experience!

I think all of us have had at least one bad CL experience. It comes with the territory.

Oouch. :o With Craigs I try to size up the people I am buying from through the phone and if it looks fishy and it involves driving a good distance I do not pursue it. If I do go I call halfway through the trip to reconfirm. It is always unpredictable no matter what. Good luck.
