Title: Is this a motor run cap?
Post by: bmwr75 on March 09, 2014, 02:15:27 PM
Am working on restoring a Pilot PT-1030 B console.  It has a Garrard RC 88 monophonic turntable in it.  When powered on, the TT tried to spin just a little, then quits.  Am guessing the .05uF cap shown in the photo is the culprit.  But the cap also has printed on it +220 ohm.  Is this a motor run cap?  Could I replace it with a .05uF film cap and resistor in series?

You need to have a record on it to drop so that the arm knows it is there, otherwise it will shut off.  I just rebuilt one of these so pm if you need extra help.

P.S.  I can scan you the manuals for it as well.

So, did you put a record on it?   Is it turning?

Sounds like a slipping idler wheel to me.
But if the motor is weak you could try just replacing the cap with a decent film cap.
I think I also have one of those turntables.

I've not tried it with a record on it yet.  Will do so when back in town this weekend.

Electro-mechanical refurb complete.  Will strip and refinish the wood cabinet one of these days.
