Post by: gdv on March 25, 2014, 11:19:40 AM
Looking for an economical basic phono preamp for a friend who needs to hook up TT to stereo w/o phono input...

Parts Express has this one below that I plan to get, unless anyone has one laying around gathering dust, my budget is $20 max

I actually do have one of those behringers, it's not fantastic but it works.

A garage sale receiver might also work, for close to the same money.  Or, Tom may have a budget model at the shop.

I'll be curious to get your impressions.

The only cheap phono pre I've heard that I felt was halfway decent was the ART DJPRE II.   If you could bump up to $49, I think you would be quite surprised by the quality of that little unit.

I searched around AudioKarma.   A couple guys claim that the ART is better sounding than a Jolida JD9.   I've never heard the JD9. but that is quite a claim as it is ten times the cost.

Thank you for all the great research/input...

Guess I should have clarified the use for this phono preamp...

I am replacing a Sound Design/Yorx type of all-in-one type of system with an Aiwa all-in-one system (She WANTS an all-in-one system!!!).  I'm hooking up an economical Sony turntable (complements of Rev - Thanks!) to the Aiwa which has no phono input...  My systems/receivers have phono inputs as needed...

A basic phono preamp unit will work fine based on this system.  Just needed an OK one, & decided to purchase from Parts Express...

Thanks again,
George

George, when you get it, plug it into a real system and give it a go for a few hours.   You know, for research sake.

That little NAD sounds very good and is a steal at $60.
