Title: I know car audio is a no-no
Post by: OldiesButGoodies on May 26, 2014, 02:52:50 PM
But is there a reason why we do not have a home theater board?

Would be nice...  just saying...

I saw Tom spend at least five minutes talking car audio when someone brought by a Marantz under dash amp.   Every rule has an exception.

That was for a 1960's Buick Skylark.  That exception makes sense.  You should see that beast.

I would gladly talk HT with you, OBG.

Do you all think it would be worth having a category under audio or as a child board somewhere in that collection of categories?

Maybe it could just be a sub-heading in the car audio section.

Stick it anywhere.  Once we find it, it won't matter.

I just look at the most recent posts anyway, I don't ever look at where it's posted.
I like me some HT. I just got a new TV stand and couch, redid my entire wiring for the living room, and finally have my speakers square against a wall rather than diagonal across a corner. It makes a world of difference, for sure. All in the last week and a half. Phew!

I have 2 cents i could put in on my previous setups and would certainly like to hear others opinions on setups they have used in the past.  I think its a great idea.

So where is the HT board?

I would like to discuss this:

I'll finally have a use for the 64 speakers I have crammed into my basement.

Great, another format and the attendant shit to buy.  It's raining right now and I don't hear it over my head-it's hitting the windows.

Well Atmos could theoretically be the end-all for surround sound formats, at least for a long time. It is scalable up to 64 speakers and regardless of where you place them you should be able to get directionally appropriate sound.

I guess it really depends on the implementation once it actually comes to home theaters but it has the potential to be very awesome.

Atmos = object-oriented coding to put sounds in specific locations in your HT space.  It sounds promising if it works.

Will add the board soon.

Call me old fashioned, but my 4.1 surround (no center) powered by Marantz tuned w/ Audessey has me pretty happy. I don't see the need for anything over 7.1 unless your room is downright huge. In which case, line arrays for days!

Maybe I don't get it.  With video, all I hope to achieve is to put the sound where it originally belonged, with a reasonable sense of realism.  I suppose improved directionality is an improvement, just as is better resolution (audio and video).  In my 12 by 16 foot room, there isn't much more space, even in the walls/ceiling, to achieve that.  And, as much as I enjoy the theater, my audio system will always be the first priority when significant additional resources are available.

On the other hand, if I were starting over, I can imagine several dozen, small, wide range drivers scattered about the room, none of which would require much power, but all of which would present a substantial combined result.  Of course, for those of you who know me, each driver/channel would be voiced to maximize frequency response at it's location.  I guess I better start buying more EQ channels:)
