Title: software for vinyl collecting ....
Post by: Jim Pittsburgh on October 05, 2015, 09:31:14 PM
wondering what software you guys are using to keep track of your vinyl collections? I'd love to find something that has a look up feature or a way to scan them in, instead of building a spread sheet and entering all 900+ titles and numbers...

Appreciate your thoughts.

Jim

I've been meaning to set up a Discogs account forever.

That's pretty much what Anders and I are doing with about 5k Lps.  Only 900 huh?  :)

Having sold half my collection to Jerry's more than ten years ago, I think,  I still just use my memory for the seven or eight hundred I probably still have.   I try to keep them sorted alphabetically by category.  I use three categories   jazz; blues/old-timey ; other  (included rock & roll, pop, classical.  I manage to find what I look for.

small collection, but enough for me, and over a 1000 if you count those in the garage. And I'm planning on purging those over the winter... (will let you all know). I want something for the insurance company as much as my own use.... and although now retired, I have no interest in entering 900 titles and numbers into a spread sheet type program, but may be faced with just that prospect.

Yes,  it probably would be good to have an inventory.  Maybe a task for the wintertime.

Not entirely sure how many I have here, 600-700? I started putting them on Discogs last winter. I had to build a bigger storage unit and alphabetize. Last week I finally got through all the A's. It's a pain. I usually enter the catalog number in the search box, like SD-1402, 90% of the time it populates the right title below. Sometimes it's obvious which copy you have, other times you got to read the matrix runout. That's if you care to get the exact release/press. I could see that not being important to some.

I believe there is a smart phone app for scanning barcodes into discogs. Never tried it because lots of my albums are older than barcodes. Usually anything before 79 didn't have one, though UPC's existed back to 74.

My wife is always requesting a list she can pick from. She's also a spreadsheet nazi. I haven't tried yet, but discogs goes you the option to export to CSV. She can get all nerdy with that.

The spreadsheet thing is painfully slow, but we made our own, and can include the info that's important to us.  It's expandable too, of course.  I think we have many many records with nothing to scan, so that feature really doesn't matter much.  I imagine though, one could create such a system and print labels, but then it's just double the work.  I thought of also including some jacket pics.

We too need an inventory, and I know Anders has some doubles of things he wants to find a home for.

We need to do the same thing for the radios and audio equipment.

My LPs and CDs are in my own somewhat organized alpha order.  I sometimes end up thumbing through things to find what I want, but in the process come across things I forgot about-this makes for pleasant surprises.

Sometimes I buy things I already have, makes for unpleasant surprises.

Discogs is the way to go.  Type in the artist name.  You will see from 1 to many "hits" come up.  Click on the one you have and add it to your collection.  Do 20 or so each night and it should not be too overwhelming unless you have as many records as Anders.

I finally got Anders to look at Discogs last night, and we're gonna give it a whirl.

Yeah it is a bit overwhelming.
I usually start putting them in and then give up.

I'd rather have pins in my eyes than catalogue my 2K+ albums. I go by memory; thus I am often pleasantly suprised when going through the shelves. If one of yins want to come over and do it for me.......

Amen.  This sounds like a lot of work.

I really like a program called "Orange CD". It'll catalog your vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and digital audio files. It uses several online tools including Amazon, discogs, CDDB, to auto enter the album. Or you can enter a UPC code and it'll find it.

You can download the full featured program and it will work for 30 days. Then buy it if you like it.

Carl also uses it and can add his $.02.

Please feel free to pm me with any questions.

There's also an app called Discographic for "smart" devices. Looks like a front end app for Discogs that basically does everything the website does. At 2.99 it's not for me, but just sharing it in case it may be helpful to others.

That's exactly what I need.   A web based app so I can check my collection while I'm out and about.

I just use Discogs via a web browser on my phone. Can search value of something before buying or double check if it's something I already own. I've bought doubles of things, sometimes it's an upgrade and sometimes it's a mistake. I also add comments to certain entries on Discogs like: "need an original press" or "noisy, need upgrade" or "track three skips".

I also use the Discogs wantlist to keep a list of things I really want. The daily emails can get expensive  >:D
