Title: KLH model 20 speakers...
Post by: gdv on November 24, 2015, 05:36:56 AM
Picked up a pair of working model 20's a few weeks back for cheap ($6)...  I just pulled them apart this morning & will install some nice gold binding posts...   Any other economical mods that I should do?  Heard people re-cap em...  Debating...   ???

Also, by chance does anyone have a pair of matching "KLH" badges they don't mind parting with?

Thanks for looking!
George

They are old enough to definitely need recapping.  I've recapped 4 pairs of KLH 6, 17 and 20s.  All benefited in the high frequencies from the recap.

Lots of info out there on "redoping" the cloth surrounds.   Lots of opinions on doing that, as well.

How do they sound as is.  Can you measure them to check performance?

The highs were lacking...

One issue, is that the previous owner (or a passing foe) decided to re-dope only ONE of the drivers!!!  So I as a minimum, want to "match" as best as I can the woofers...  Hopefully in both appearance & performance...

Thanks for looking & hope all have a wonderful & blessed Thanksgiving!!!  :)

One other issues I did not mention before...  ONE of the woofers was redoped w/ "black stuff."

Like the attached picture...

I have no idea of "what" was used...

The other is "original"  Like this...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-of-KLH-Model-Twenty-10-Speaker-WOOFER-drivers-20-/301676089362?hash=item463d4bd012:g:gbcAAOSw2s1UxpwJ (http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-of-KLH-Model-Twenty-10-Speaker-WOOFER-drivers-20-/301676089362?hash=item463d4bd012:g:gbcAAOSw2s1UxpwJ)

I really do NOT want to invest much more time (or money) in the project...  I would like to have a set of model 20's that I can sell...

My questions are...
1. Do I try to "match" the other "redoped" speaker?  Not sure how to do this?
2. Just buy another "original" model 20 woofer and redope this and my "original" woofer?  I purchased the "Vintage AR" doping solution from epay...

Thanks for your thoughts...

I'd be willing to bet that the "black stuff" is Wet Look.

If I'm looking to flip, I dope the other to match and send them along.   I might even still have some of that stuff in the basement, if it hasn't all dried out (then it would be "dry look", I guess).

I am not sure a pair of working model 20s is worth much more than the replacement woofer, at $50.  If flipping is the goal, I agree with STaL

If anyone has one/a "spare" KLH model 20 woofer (4 ohm), please let me know...

As I have no way to "MATCH" the one "surround modified" woofer, I am looking for one woofer...  If no one on the forum has one, I'll probably put the speakers back in the "to do" storage room!  :)

I've already checked epay & there is nothing in my price range...

Happy New Year & thanks for looking!

I kept meaning to PM you.   I found my Wet Look and it is still liquid if you want to try it.   That's what I would do before sinking money into speakers you plan to flip anyway.
