So is the room they are in, at least the room Ron had them in when I heard them.

Ron's setup has an exceptional soundstage, wide and deep.  The imaging is very 3D.  Nice and smooth, very easy to listen to his Harbeths.

Coordinating a visit to Ron's,  who has kindly offered to demo his, before buying.  Interested in the Super HL5 and the Compact 7s.   Looking forward to changing the signature to include one or the other!

Give me a great room acoustics-wise and mid-fi speakers over expensive speakers and a room with poor acoustics any day.

Ron's listening room is what made me realize the room is 80-90% of the sonic equation.  It inspired me to build a golden rule listening room when we moved to MS.  After acoustically treating it from GIK and setting up the speakers using some guys recommendations (forget his name, bought the book and DVD), I'm amazed at what a $1500 pair of speakers can sound like when paired with a sychronistic amp, preamp and decent DA + digital source.  I've probably got $5500 total invested in this audio system, bought a piece at a time over many years.   Add another $1500 for stereo subs and $200 for miniDSP HD as icing on the bass cake.  Total invested $7200.

I'll bet that your audio setup sounds like a million $$$!  Someday I hope to it.  ;D

Ron shared this video with - a very cool watch, IMO. Good background on how the BBC ended up building speakers and about the Harbeth approach to design.  Looking forward to getting my pair.

Interesting story.  Thanks for sharing.

Have you decided on a particular model?  New or used and direct or through a dealer?

If you're wanting a new pair I'm a dealer and can probably have them drop shipped to you . Toss me a PM if you're at all interested and we can figure out what model you want and what the pricing is. Obviously I wouldn't charge MSRP.

Dublin is only about 3 hours from Downtown Pittsburgh.  An easy day trip.  Last time I was in the area, there were two high end audio shops not at all out of the way.

No issue George.  I am in the middle of relocating to the West coast to be closer to my three kids, going back to the same house where they grew up, I never sold it.  So slowly packing everything...  That is partly why I sold the beautiful but large and heavy VMPS RM40s.  The 2nd floor room I will use as a music room in the old house is much much smaller than what I have now (a basement),  so the towers would have been excessive and impossible for me to carry up there.  But, they were great speakers,  to be remembered fondly in my mental speaker hall of fame!

Agreed.   I am always impressed by the things people in this hobby are willing to do for equipment.   The buyer of the VMPS drove from Chicago on a snowy, bad weather, day to pick them up.  Then drove back that same night (it was a father-son duo,  I think they stopped somewhere short of Chicago to grab some sleep).
