Title: PGH Noob
Post by: TH84 on March 24, 2018, 01:32:31 PM
Thanks Sir Thrifts-a-lot for letting me know about this site, appreciate it.

Live in North Hills of Pittsburgh (originally from Delaware) and I primarily work from home.

I've been building a decent vinyl collection over the years, mostly listening on mass produced crap or an old console in my basement gym area...have really been wanting to get into a proper setup for my home office and unable to find any good thrift/estate/flea/yard sale steals, recently overpaid for some stuff to get going.

Primarily a jazz & blues listener - mix in classic rock, alternative, salsa & merengue, and some newer music (Twiddle, Wood Brothers, Sister Sparrow, Ghosts of Paul Revere, Ripe, Marcus King Band, etc).  Usually good for a music festival or two a year.

Current Setup
TT: Marantz 6270Q
Receiver: Technics SA-5160
Speakers: cheap POS (currently seeking replacements)

Welcome to the forum!  Any relation to the legendary Big Tom - Tom Hoffman?

Nope, just plain old common Tom, no current connections to legendary status, relation or otherwise ;)

Welcome, Tom

I've got a set up in the home gym that is becoming more a home gym in a pile of speakers vinyl, and audio gear. I'm east of the city too if you're ever out Murrysville way, give a shout.

Welcome. Love Marcus King, hopefully he makes a stop around here sometime.

I’m sure someone here can point you in good direction for speakers.

He is opening for Tedeschi/Trucks.   I won tickets for that show and am very excited.

Welcome TH,  Once you decide about any particular piece of gear of interest, I am sure someone on this Forum and be of help.  I am also located North and some of our musical tastes overlap.  Always open for a listening session

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Glad there is a local group to join, esp since its a lot less stuffy in there than AK.

At least you've bought well.   No more POS speakers.

"but can't stop buying stuff"  I think all of us suffer from this dreaded disease...  It will eventually stop...  Either you will run out of money OR run out of space!!!   >:D

For me it has never stopped.  Rather it becomes less frequent and more expensive. Maybe I have reached or passed the point of diminishing returns

I have reached that point where it is less frequent, just as I cant get out as much as I used to.  If delivery rates werent so high Id end up with shipped items :D

I can relate to not being able to stop buyng stuff.  In the past 3 weeks I've purchased 2 vintage receivers. A Nikko STA-8080 which is really nice. The seller went through the unit, cleaned it up and replaced the bulbs.  Then I saw a Kenwood KR-6030 on Craigslist that was in really nice condition.  The seller dropped his price, so now I own both...
