Title: popping sounds......
Post by: OddLot on November 24, 2009, 10:31:44 PM
I used to live in the 'Burgh a few years ago and got a sweet stereo while there.  It is a mid '90s era Pioneer receiver and 2 JBL L40 speakers.  It sounds awesome.

Here is the problem - one of the speakers has started making fuzzy popping sounds - every few minutes or once per hour.. whether or not anything is playing.. but not if the receiver is turned off.  I replaced the wire going to the offending speaker, no change.  I switched from the A to the B channels on the receiver - no change.  But when I switched the wires so the left channel goes through right speaker etc and the popping followed the wire - it was left and is now right.  Receiver, eh?  It has been moved a lot and lives cramped in a cabinet if that is relevant.  Doesn't seem to get too hot though..

Appreciate any help.  I am in New York City if you know any good shops here.

Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy,

Open up the receiver and search for bulging caps. Pops are cap related quite a bit.

Welcome to the forum.

If you cannot find a good place to take it, I would suggest a road trip back to the Burg on one of our Meeting nights.  Beer, Cigars, Music and playing with volt meters and a soldering iron. ;D

Thanks - that would be cool - I'll try to make it back there on one of meeting weekends...

Poping sounds can also be almost any component in the amp section (leaky transistor). Consider getting it fixed before it damages something else (speaker).
                                        just my two cents

I had (Knock on wood) that problem with my SA-9100 but it seems to have went away. Are you a member of Audio Karma? There is a guy that can be summoned in the Pioneer forum by the name of Mark The Fixer, he knows everything Pioneer. Its really frightening how much this guy knows.
