Title: Hello, all. New to the forum.
Post by: Bill Cain on November 04, 2010, 06:47:12 PM
Hello, all.

Picked up a pair of Klipsch Heresy's at Vintage Hi-Fi, yesterday. I will power them with some Dynaco MKII's.

This is my 4th pair of Heresy's since the Seventies.  Originally I had the Industrial models, which were stolen.  They were replaced with standard Heresy's and I also picked up some KP-250's for DJ work.  The KP's have a DriveRack and a Macrotech 3600 providing the juice for them and their KP-115 subs.  My large DJ system has 2 EAW SB180's, 2 EAW FR253's and 2 JBL slot tweeters.  Another DriveRack feeds a MA3600, MA2400, MA600 and a pair of D75's for the large system.  Bozak 10 2DL and Rane 2016 combo mixers are my favorite.  For DJ processing gear I use an FBX2400, a dbx 3bx III, an exr Exciter and a dbx 120x DS.  I am partial to Technics SL-1200 turntables and Technics SLP-1200 CD Players and have a Denon DN-D9000.  I also have four Split LaScala's, with Fiberglas and aluminum trim.
 :o
For home use I have a pair of Dahlquist DQ10's and a Velodyne 12" sub.  Each DQ has a DC300A (mono) to drive it and a White Instruments 1/3 octave EQ.  The front end is a Denon AVP-8000.  Feeding the AVP are a Denon DN-C615 CD Player, a Denon DN-1050R Mini Disc Recorder, a Denon DN-770R Dual Tape Recorder and a Technics SL-1200 turntable.  An SCE Harmonic Recovery System is in the loop for processing.

Hi Bill, welcome to the forum.  Good to see another south hills guy on here.  You might want to remove your signature card with your phone #/address for security reasons.

Welcome Bill!!! Sounds like a pretty sweet setup you have there with the DQ-10's. Wish I had a chance to play with mine before I blew them up! Remember...200 watt rated continuous...

Hi Bill. Met you yesterday at the shop. Hop you are enjoying the Klipsches.

Thank you.  Maybe I'll get to them on Sunday.  No Steeler game....
Have to help a friend out with some production work on Friday and Saturday.
Heresy's have been my favorite speaker, since the late Seventies, for small gigs and fills.

A mono DC300 only puts out 600 watts peak, but I promise to be careful.  They were upgraded, back in the Eighties, with IOC circuits.  So I can easily monitor them for clipping.

I try to be careful with my PA stuff, also.  I use a MA3600 with my KP-115/KP-250 combo's.
Although that amp will pump 1565W @ 4 ohms stereo, I don't use any compression; so the average is much lower.

I have four dbx 160x's which I no longer use when doing gigs.  They might be good for live PA with a band... but for DJ work they don't make sense to me.  I prefer to have lots of headroom.  I even use PIP CLPs to keep from creating square waves.   ;D

Ryan,

Thanks for the welcome.
I have an AR-15, a Model 59 and Super Blackhawk for "security."
I promise I won't post my social security number, though.

I haven't done the mirror imaging, yet.
I may research that in the future.
It was a very popular mod, back in the day.

They are pretty damn good speakers.  Very efficient and accurate.  Only potential deficiency could be in lowest octaves at higher playback levels.  But that would depend on what your program material might be.  I used to use them with 18" subs for modern (rock & hip-hop) music at dance levels.  Mine (LSI-BG models) weigh a lot, due to the Fiberglas overlay, so they don't get out much.  I may use a single pair for a Record Collector's meeting, one of these days.  They would be fine w/o subs at more reasonable listening levels.

Thanks to any welcome messages I have not personally replied to.
I appreciate the very positive thoughts.

If there are any questions about DJ / PA gear, please pose them.  I have been around the block a few times and would be happy to help out, if I can.  Some caveats:

1} I do not speak Bose, self-powered plastic speakers or mp3 files.

2) I do speak Bozak, Crown, dbx, Denon, EAW, Klipsch, Rane, vinyl and 1st generation CD.

If you understand the differences between 1 and 2, I'm here to help.

Thank you.    Really Good Stuff is timeless.

I used to listen to CKLW and WABC, when the skip was good.  That was on a 1960 vintage GE 5 transistor radio.  9 volt batteries were 69 cents and were made with mercury.  Ah, the good old days......

Hi Bill,

I was not familiar with the Heresy pro-line till recently,  Picked up a set a while back and they rocked my place for halloween.  Ugly as dirt, but good sounding.  Hope to hook up to some tubes this week.

Welcome!!

Congrats!!!!

Industrial Heresy’s are the most amazing speakers for the DJ market.  I bought my first pair in the Seventies.  They were HIP’s (Heresy Industrial Ported) and were both bulletproof and sonically incredible.  I’d still have them if they weren’t stolen when I lived in NY.

Over 30 years ago, I filled in at a bar for a friend who used whatever was the Bose Flavor of the Month.  When he returned to that gig, he was told how lousy his speakers sounded.  Oops.  He bought a pair of HIP’s and uses them, to this day, doing weddings.

Hi Bill,

Mine are also labeled HIP, but they are not ported.  Are you sure yours were?

I am very sure.   ;D

Is there a slot at the bottom / front of your speaker?

That slot DOES make a difference and you are fortunate to have them, instead of "vanilla" HI's.

If you ever want to sell them, let me know.   :o

Re: 800's.

-- I'm pretty sure that's the model a friend was using before I filled in for him as a DJ in a bar.  He ended up buying Klipsch HIP's.  He still uses them, over 30 years later.  I never owned Bose.

Re: Bose "Pro" stuff.

-- I have mixed feelings, based upon what is being played through them.

-- One friend uses a pair of Line Array (L1?) stuff, for live use, for his acoustic duo.  Works for him and sounds fine.  Very expensive, tho.  But he likes their packaging and appearance.  They sound fine to me, in this "live" application.

-- Another friend bought the same system for DJ use and used them at a gig.  I listened to them and did not like the sound.  Comb filtering, no real high end and no real bottom end were apparent.  But "coverage" was very good.  Sounded crappy, everywhere.  lol  He returned them the next day.

Overall biased opinion?  I don't see how you can get a full-range sound with a boatload of tiny radiators and a ton of EQ.  While they may do OK in a "live" situation, they don't seem to replicate known material very well.  Your mileage may vary.
 ;D
Hope my P.O.V. gives you some insight.
