Well, I've wanted a Dolby S deck for some time now. A good deal popped up. I splurged. Not bad considering it went for $750 in 1994.

It's only a 2 head, but it has a cult following. It goes 20-20 for all tape types. A guy on AK said that it's the closest sounding deck he's heard to his Nak Dragon. I must admit, it sounds pretty damn good.

Thanks to Tom for the tapes!

Very nice. I had a sony ES 3 head dolby S unit awhile back. It sounded great. I picked it up for $15 through craigslist from a guy who said his parent's bought if for him and tapes are dead. I turned around and sold it on epay for $350!
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

Oh wow, what a deal, Ed!

It was between this and a Sony 3 head deck from CL.. All the reviews I found said go with the 4600, as it has absurdly good sound quality for a 2 head machine. I think I might be hanging on to this one for a while.

Additionally, Dolby didn't just toss out licenses for type S circuitry. A deck had to meet certain criteria to be able to wear the Type S logo.
