Another new turntable
« on: March 28, 2012, 06:18:52 PM »
I love oddball equipment and this guy is no exception.  It's a Funk Firm Vector turntable.  Made in the UK.  The whole thing probably weighs less than 5 pounds.  The feet act like suspension so the legs move around in place of springs.  The platter is a lightweight plastic/resin material which is a cross between styrofoam and plastic.  It has the upgraded rega tonearm, nothing fancy but it sounds very good.  Very clean.  It sounds amazing.

I will be rewiring the arm with litz wire and michell silver plated connectors.  This will connect to an external DIY aluminum box with gold plated rca jacks/ground via a mini plug (like a poor man's vpi).  I picked up a michell clamp and i'll also be getting an upgraded michell tonearm weight as well.  Should be a fun project.  Sorry for the crappy photos like usual.

Where do you find all these nice turntables?, I'm jealous, it looks nice.

Good luck with the wiring of the arm.

Wow! Rev. That thing is WILD!! I too am curious where you find that shit!
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

I've read about them, but never heard one.
Love the style!
Similar design to Rega.....light & quick with good PRaT.
Where did that slab of wood come from?
It's as purdy as the TT!
....just an "ON" switch, Please!

Looks like a cutting board with feet attached.

Ding ding ding.  Wife had those 20% off coupons at Bed, bath & beyond.  I will get a piece of black marble or granite at some point.

Pepe, i'll be around next week, maybe you can swing by one night after the gym.  I'll be on vacation in two weeks, I was thinking of bringing it into the shop next weekend and have Tom give it a spin for a week or two if he wants.

I also need to fashion some kind of dust cover, that will be a interesting project as well.

Rev - what about devising a dust cover out of 5 pieces of thin cut glass siliconed together,  like an inverted aquarium but using thinner glass?

Or use a fancy version of a  food tent - http://www.taylorgifts.com/item/set_of_3_food_tents/31907  or

Step one of my rewire is done.  I bought a diy aluminum box, nice gold plated connectors and an oddball 4 pin connector to create a external conjunction box.  I wired the box using litz wire.  I mounted a base to it so it will sit vertically.  Next, I will be rewiring the rega tonearm, also with litz wiring, and adding the 4 pin male end directly to the tonearm wire so it can plug into the box.  Here's some crappy pics of the conjunction box.  Notice there is no ground.  The arm is isolated on the platter and does not use one.  The rca jacks are also isolated from the aluminum box so one should not be needed.

Thanks Tinpan!

It took about 4 hours but the arm has been rewired and i'm listening to it for the first time now.  Wow.  A vast improvement in a table I already thought sounded pretty good.  Just beautiful.  I'll post some pictures later today or this week.  A very rewarding project.  The only issue is the conjunction box is not heavy enough.  Once a pair of rca's are connected, it will tip over.  I'll have to think about how I want to handle this.

I decided to add a ground wire, the internal ground was pretty mediocre and I wanted to ground the arm and the body of the tonearm.  It's crazy, you can tap on the turntable body and there is no noise.
