Receiving the New Bob Amps
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:23:21 PM »
Finally relented and bought a pair of Bob amps (aka Black Beautys, in BLACK!).  Tom souped them up with Valve Art matched sextet KT88s.  Sound awesome:

Notice the improved speaker terminas. Bias is now done with the amp in idle,  no need fr a second toggle switch.

They sound great - Bob knows what he is doing!

Whose socks are featured in the bottom corner of one of the photos? :)

Pepe, those things are, well, we all know what they are. No offense to the red amps, but, those things are drop dead sexy in black!  ;D

Awesome!! Just imagine how good the Proacs will sound on those amps!  ;D
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

We had the Carver Amazings hooked up biamped to the quad of Bob amps we had at hand and well,  they sound AMAZING.  Rev - I am now inclined to declare that the Silvers, with their front facing woofs have a definite advantage over the ALIIIs (I have not heard the ALIIIs with the Infinity car woofer mod,  but based on listening to your silvers and to Tom's Amazings with the Bob amps - the bass is just perfect).

Thanks for all the kudos guys - I will take pics of the set up at home and post later!

I'm inclined to agree.  I'm sure the woofer upgrade and active crossovers would be a huge improvement but i favor the front facing drivers overall.

Phase alignment has to be better with the front-facing woofs,  the attack is much more coherent.  Still,  the ALIIIs sound pretty darn good no matter what.

Hey all - just a reminder:  the Proacs are in someone's living room in Vietnam - sold them three months ago.  The Bob amps sound great on the Reference 3a MMs though!

Pepe.

Congratulations on your new Black Beauties they are GREAT amps and Tom's such a good guy
in making sure every thing works right. They should be the last tube amps you ever purchase
made to last 50 years plus.

When you are ready, try the KT120's what it does for the bass is beautiful.

Some days I regret sell my set of Cherry 260's, but did not have enough room for 2 set's of tube mono blocks in the house.
