I love Unifawn Records
« on: September 06, 2013, 09:30:32 PM »
Nice little shop with a well curated selection of post punk and power pop.   Everything that falls outside of those "core" categories gets sold at really reasonable prices.   Today I got an absolute steal.   The Atlantic Rhythm & Blues box set, 14 albums, in stone cold mint condition (they really don't look like they have ever been played) for $18!    I've wanted this on vinyl for years.   I loved the CD box set back in the day.

The owner said that he knew he could have gotten $75-100 on eBay, but he believes he will only make locals happy if he gets a reputation for keeping the good stuff in the store and off the auction sites.   He made me very happy today and I wanted you all to know.  Go check him out.

BTW, he is a former marketing rep from WEA and will keep you in interesting conversation as you browse.   He is a good guy who knows a lot about music and music retail.

My score...

Pittsburgh is a great place to be a vinyl lover.

Last time I was in there he had a really rare French EP by Alex Chilton for some absurd price ($6 or $8, IIRC).   Every time I stop there I find something even though it is a small shop.   Either it is extremely well curated or the owner and I just have the same taste in music.

I need to check that out, but first I need a new record cabinet... out of room in my 4 section Ikea thing.
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

I stopped in there earlier this summer.  It is a nice shop and the owner is a nice guy with
way more music knowledge than I.  And parking is very easy...hes just at the edge of Lawrenceville.
Plenty of street parking.

For new releases, that list doesn't cover the (IMHO) best seller of new vinyl...

Soundcat Records (formerly Paul's CDs) in Bloomfield.

A burger at Tessaros is one of this city's greatest delights.
