Speaker Refoaming Question
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:25:58 PM »
I am looking at a pair of Advent Large and the wolfers have been refoamed.  What questions should I ask?

I wouldn't ask any questions. I would get down next to the woofer that has been refoamed and push it in and out a few times. Listen for any scraping and try to feel if anything is rubbing. The biggest problem with a bad refoaming would be the voice coil being off center and rubbing against the magnet. If you feel or hear anything I'd pass or at least negotiate a lower price so you could have them refoamed correctly.

If they are on ebay, I assume the best route would be to assume the refoam is bad and negotiate accordingly.

I'm not sure buying large advents on ebay is really worth the cost of shipping, similar or better speakers pop up on CL often enough.

I tend to agree with the above post. Buying Large Advents on ePay may not be a very "bang for the buck" maneuver.

Unless you specifically want Large Advents, you can get better stuff for less locally.

Original Large Advents and New Large Advents come up pretty often around here.  I've bought and sold three pairs in recent years.  I bet somebody on this forum has a pair they are not using right now.

I agree w bmwr75,  give us a few weeks and someone here will report on a pair od Advents  available to sell.  Check with Gene at Trader Jacks,  he had a pair or two available not long ago.  Speakers that size get easily damaged during shipping unless packes by someone experienced, plus you cannot really see what you are buying.

Yep, I didn't bother posting because I thought treos nailed it.   That seems to be the consensus.

I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

I have one of those. I had Tom mod it with Litz wire and rca jacks. It's a great sounding table, albeit ugly as sin.

How do you like the litz? I like the way my black sl1200 mkii looks! My Denon 57f and Technics 1301 look great, but just don't sound as good.
