12AX7 recommendations Jolida JD9
« on: August 27, 2013, 08:36:37 AM »
Was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on good sounding 12AX7  tubes for the Jolida JD9 phono preamp?
I enjoyed the RAM high ends ( #s on the box are 29 16 5 56 210  56/56: SS S/N 1327 GRD=SLN) that came with the used Jolida JD9. They faded and I replaced them witha pair of Black Sable brand  that were advertised as being "smooth" ( don't remember the model or brand but they were not cheap)... they were just dull and lifeless. I returned them for a pair of Black Sable Tung Sol Gold Pin, gold quality that I have truly enjoyed (105 gain, low output and fast ring down).... very clear and articulate.  I'm looking to try something else....

Just wanted your thoughts... Thanks

Jim

Vintage Telefunkens seem to be loved by all.   Vintage Mullards are loved by some, hated by others.

I have NOS Mullard 12ax7 and 12at7's in my Carver amps and love them.  I'm running matched NOS Mullards in my pre as well.  Telefunkens are also very good, it's a matter of opinion as Mark stated.  They both sound much better than any new tube.

If you manage to find a deal on a decent size lot of 12ax7 tubes tell me and I might help you buy them.  I need to get a pair of nice ones for my Sunfire tube preamp.

For me its Telefunkens or India.
India tubes are rare and NOT made in China.
I use India tube in my SP6 and they sound slightly better than Telefunkens.
And both theses tubes tend to never go bad.
Changed them after 3 years and heard no difference.
If you want to be cheap i'd use some old RCAs which should sound ok and last awhile.

thanks for the thoughts and opinions.... appreciate you taking the time to answer my  question. tubes are a serious learning curve for me... funny that I find rolling tubes to get the sound I like/ want the same as buying/ selling/ trading amps, preamps, phono preamps ... only a little less expensive lol

You can also sub a 12AU7 or 5751 in the 12AX7 slot. They are both a little less gain but can sound outstanding.

The Brimar 13D5 which is a very high quality 12AU7 sounds quite stunning, nice and warm with layers and layers of detail.

GE triple mica black plat 5751's are fairly cheap and sound great.

Siemens ECC83 (12AX7) dual post getter is a great sounding tube.
