Magnavox CD 2000 Score
« on: June 07, 2014, 04:34:20 PM »
Scored a Magnavox (Phillips) CD 2000 today at the flea market.  Works great.  Ready to start making upgrades and see it it competes with the Phillips CD-80.

Uses the Phillips TDA 1543 DAC (not as cool as the 1541 but a close relative and a well regarded DAC - some prefer it to the 1541).  Notice the copper-plated PCB.

First step will be to recap it and then add decent RCA interconnects.

Very nice, OBG.  I hit several sales around Uniontown today.. empty handed once again!

Maybe the Philips will hit the market for real?

I was selling the CD-80,  but then I played the Santana Supernatural CD on both the cd-80 and  the Oppo, and the CD-80 won.  So I decided to keep it.  Will probably sell it of the Maganvox eventually though.   ;)

I never would have thought about the Magnavox - Phillips connection.   I wonder if I passed on any of these at the thrift thinking they were BPC.

Nick -

Very nice - so you had the entire output section replaced with a tubed section?  There is a lot of space in there to do things like that.

I did not build nor have this one built, its an early hand built Melos.  He used an off the shelf Magnavox CDP.  It uses an all tube output stage, external power supply and the 1543 DAC chip.  One of my museum pieces, extremely rare.

Call me Captain Obvious here but if the CD80 is the best thing you've heard, and you're itching to mod something, why not look into modding it?   ???

I should look into it.  The things is built like a tank.  Just tearing it apart seems like cracking a bank vault.

One plus of buying the Magnavox:  it includes two Phillips mechanism red locking screws.  So now I can sell the Phillips on Ebay  >:D

But you have a point.  Will do more research on what can be done.

Mike (Flacon?):  Can you clarify (if you know) what was done to mod this cd-80 before you sold it to me?

Thanks

P

So OBG, how does one know if they got one of the good Magnavox CD players?   I picked up one today that has the Pioneer type 6 disc cartridge changer.   It also has the red locking things on the back.   I haven't listened yet, but it did spin up and give track times in the store.

$5 at Goodwill.   I never would have bought it if not for this thread.   Even if it's not one of the good ones, for that price I can throw it into a give away system.

What do I look for inside?   A particular chip in the DAC?

Dear Stal:

The Maggie geniuses will soon weigh in and countermand what I write here,  but the key traits are the TDA 1543 or (better) 1541.  And the Phillips transport.  In mine the DAC is kind of hidden by the transport mechanism.

Congrats on the find...

TGIF!!!!!

Okay, the unit is a Magnavox CDB-496.   Because of the cartridge changer, this thing is far more cyphered together than I care to deal with.   I did not find a TDA 1543 or 1541, but I didn't find anything I could positively ID as the DAC.   I also can not say if it is a Philips transport (I was too afraid that if I took it apart it was never going back together again), but I can tell you that almost everything in it is labeled Philips.

What I did find in my Google search was this thread at AK about the CDB-492.

http://mail.audiokarma.net/forums/showthread.php?t=393811

That unit sure looks like it would be the single disc version of what I have, so I would think there to be a certain likelihood that they would use the same chipset, but who knows.   It has the 1543 and the Philips laser.

I think my plan is to put this in my next Pepe stash.   If you can turn it into something wonderful, have at it.   If not, we can put it in a give away system.   At the very least, it sounds like the three red things in the back will be of use to you.

You know, I used to spend my Monday evenings doing normal things like playing with the kids or watching TV.   Now I get screwdrivers, magnifying lenses and the internet and try to ID components.   I am diseased and I blame all of you.
