This forum would be awesome with a group chat feature
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:21:13 PM »
I could be asking for the most impossible thing ever, I don't know anything about website or forum building.  I have been involved in other groups though that have a scrolling chat on top of the screen.  I thought it was a pretty cool feature (example: www.mustangcollective.com)

Anyway I just thought I'd throw that idea out there because it came to my mind as something that might be cool.

Funny you should mention it... I was looking into the idea myself.

It is possible to setup a "shoutbox" as its called on the forum,
but I do have some reservations.

Mainly what has been holding me back is I feel the boards
carry a topic of conversation much better, and good information could be lost
if its carried in the chat window.

Matt, do you scrollback in the chat window to see what has beed discussed
when you jump on the Mustang forum?

Also, the boards allow you to see unread conversations so you can catch up on
the topic. I don't think that is possible with the chat window, so I see it only useful if folks
are online at the same time.

I am not so sure we have enough forum members yet to even give it a try. I would think it's success would be volume based.

Actually, I was thinking the opposite in regards to the number of online members.
Too many participants may make it noisy and annoying.

There is only one way to find out. If it sucks, it is easily removed. :o

It is in the pipeline. I just upgraded the forum software due to a security patch
so I'm waiting for the add-ons to catch up before I install the chatbox.

Chat feature is installed; Lets give it a whirl.
Youll notice it on the main forum index.

I'll put up a poll after a few weeks, and
nobody likes it, we'll take it down.
