Anyone Like custom turntables?!!
« on: December 14, 2010, 10:26:10 AM »
My latest creation:

The turntable started out as a Pioneer PL-41. Here are the mods:

-Plinth re-veneered in cherry with a custom stain applied.
-Plinth interior treated with cork for dampening.
-Metal turntable base powdercoated "aluminum".
-Platter sanded and fully polished to a nearly mirror like finish.
-Sumiko Premier FT-3 tonearm installed (rewired with litz wiring)
-Turntable cover sanded and polished.
-3/4 inch baltic birch base installed.
-Chrome spikes added to base for isolation.

Thank you. The strength of this turntable is the 4-pole hysteresis synchronous motor. Rock steady for pitch. It also has a heavy 2.2KG platter. That and the weight of this thing is heavy. It is a beast! The Sumiko arm is a top shelf arm. I also forgot to mention that  I wet sanded the bearing with multiple grades of sandpaper and fully polished them. I also replaced the thrust washer with a new one made of delrin. You would have to spend a lot of money to get this kind of performance from a modern turntable.

Nice.   I tried to rewire the arm of a Dual SunnyDaze sold me and lost my patience after ten minutes. I am in awe of your skills.  Pepe.

The semester ends tomorrow at 5pm Pepe. I'll gladly buy it back for the price you paid. I"ll get that sucker working ASAP. :)

Now, back to this thread... That Pioneer looks amazing. We should do a TT shootout at Toms one weekend!
